Personality

Sukuna's selfish, cold-hearted, immoral, and exceptionally sadistic. When he was reincarnated shortly after Itadori Yūji ingested his finger, he commented, implying the slaughter of women and children and likening them to maggots crawling around. Due to his immense power, he rarely cares about the consequences of his actions, even if these affect his host. In fact, he frequently taunts and insults Yūji, calling him a brat and even laughing at or enjoying Yūji's despair on multiple occasions. Sukuna's aware of his immense power and is quite arrogant about it, brutalizing a finger bearer while being patronizing and proclaiming his superiority over it. For this reason, he's highly dismissive of his opponents and rarely takes them seriously, even explicitly stating he'd kill Gojō Satoru to his face. However, these brutish traits aren't to be confused for stupidity. Sukuna's highly intelligent and manipulative, taking Yūji's body hostage by tearing out his heart to force him into a Binding Vow. He's also displayed the ability to acknowledge and praise his opponents, as shown by how before killing Jogo, Sukuna acknowledged his strength despite having completely overpowered him and told Jogo that he should be proud.

Backstory

According to a legend, during the golden age of jujutsu over 1,000 years ago, Sukuna was an Imaginary Demon, though in truth was a human sorcerer (Sukuna was a curse user, but Gege thinks he is something closely similar to a natural disaster), and other sorcerers gave their all to defeat him. When he was still a human, his surroundings were scared to death. He was known as the “King of Curses” even before he became a cursed object. In his previous life, Sukuna did not have a wife or children. He had Uraume, who was his subordinate. He was described as a man of inhuman strength, with a two-faced head plus a total of eight limbs, four arms and legs respectively, that served each face. Wielding a multitude of weapons in his many hands (incl. a bow, arrow, and sword), he terrorized village after village in ancient Hida, plundering and leaving chaos in his wake. That is, until a brave military commander dispatched by the Imperial Court, named Takefurukuma no Mikoto, stepped forth and put an end to the monster's tyranny, expelling him from Hida. After his death, he became a cursed spirit, and his curse was too strong for his body to be fully destroyed. Henceforth, his remains of 20 indestructible fingers, preserved in grave wax, traversed the ages as cursed objects, ever growing in power.

Sukuna can’t be compared to Satoru in terms of fear. But it’s not necessarily like that, a long time ago (during Sukuna’s time), curse users and cursed spirits alike ran rampant more than in the present time. They gradually calmed down but when Satoru burst into life, the excitement raised again.

Sukuna is based on the same-named figure from Japanese mythology: Ryōmen-sukuna (両りょう面めん宿すく儺な?). He is a demonic/specter-like figure described in the Nihon Shoki, said to have appeared in the Hida Province (today's Gifu Prefecture) in ancient times, during the reign of Emperor Nintoku in the 4th century. Ryomen-sukuna was worshipped by some as a minor deity, and statues depicting his distinctly two-faced head can still be found today in Gifu temples and shrines. One theory states that Ryomen-sukuna is a symbol of twins and brothers, therefore it refers to Oousu no Mikoto and Ousu no Mikoto (i.e. Yamato Takeru no Mikoto and his brother), twins in ancient Japanese history. Another theory states that Ryomen-sukuna refers to Emperor Chuai's sons, Kagosaka no Miko and Oshikuma no Mikoto. Both pairs of brothers are deeply related to Mino and Hida Provinces. Takeuchi-monjo (an ancient text which recorded the lineage of ancient kami and a dynasty preceding Emperor Jinmu) wrote Hida Province as "日玉国" or "日霊国," indicating that Hida was Takamanohara (plain of high heaven) and Kuraiyama Mountain was the Pyramid. It is considered that Ryomen-sukuna had a Hida-based dynasty the same size as the Yamato Dynasty. In the region where Ryomen Sukuna originated, he was not treated as a hero, nor did he have anything named after him. The Sukuna of “Jujutsu Kaisen” is named as such because his appearance and strength are like that of Ryōmen-sukuna.

For common understanding of his technique, if anyone were to search through the literature, they would understand that there’s slashing involved to a certain degree. However, the fire-based powers are rather unknown.

Sukuna's technique names appear to have some relation with cooking. His Domain Expansion, 伏魔御厨子 (Fukuma Mizushi?), has been translated officially as "Malevolent Shrine", but 伏魔 (Fukuma?) is more literally translated as "place where demons hide" and 御厨子 (Mizushi?) is an archaic word referring to a kitchen or the emperor's eating area. His cutting techniques 解カイ (Kai?) and 捌ハチ (Hachi?) also use kanji used in cooking to refer to "dismantling" and "filleting" fish.

He probably thought it was some weird book about cards taking over humanity or some shit— This MF probably doesn't know what card games are unless Yūji played one after getting Sukuna. Probably thought all modern-day card games were for children so when he starts reading the cards, he's more than just a bit surprised. He's living for it, though. Will make the most disturbing / inappropriate pairs you've ever seen in this game. He's a fucking menace and I hate it. Imagine Mahito being the Card Czar and the black card he draws is: How would you describe me, the Card Czar, using only one of the cards in your hand, which would it be? And Sukuna pulled out the cock sucker card—anxious vessel ▸ He'll absolutely bully you for being a nervous wreck; “You share a body with the king of curses, don’t insult me by being anxious. It’s not like anything could even touch you.” He really, really doesn’t understand (how could he) but you can’t share a body and half a mind with someone and not get a little attached, even if you’re Sukuna. After the first several fingers have been found and it’s been a while since you became his vessel, he sort of resigns himself to treating you like a slightly inconvenient pet / roommate. He pays attention to your inner monologue and adds comments that might seem harsh but help to keep you from spiraling into negative thoughts. He keeps telling himself he isn’t going soft, it’s just better in the long run to have a mentally stable vessel. He doesn’t want you failing to collect all 20 fingers. He can’t keep ignoring it when you have a panic attack one night and beg him to take control, so you don’t have to feel the physical affects. He does so without hesitation — the genuine desperation in your voice shaking him to his core. When he first takes over, he feels how your heart was racing and how it felt like there was a twisting weight in your sternum — a shaking hand reaching to touch it in confusion. He’s never personally experienced something like this, and even though he knows that you struggle with it, he’s only ever had to deal with the echoes of your thoughts. He scowls at the idea of you being so upset that you face physical repercussions. He’s able to reign in your body’s fight or flight instinct, overriding it with his cold and calm demeanor, and lays down in your bed, allowing the adrenaline crash to put you to sleep. When your body is fully unconscious, he ends up back in his domain, assuming your soul will have slipped back into its rightful place as soon as he left. But you’re seated in front of his throne, head pillowed on your arms that you’ve rested on the seat. His first instinct is to belittle you for being so pathetic and letting your guard down around him, but as he watches the steady rise and fall of your back with each breath, realizes how long it’s been since he’s seen you this calm. Over the last few months, you’ve become more high-strung, each mission pushing you harder and harder, while also reminding you that your time with these new friends was limited. That there was a very real end date for you. He’d found himself hearing your racing thoughts later and later into the night, sleep becoming virtually nonexistent for you. And, so, he begrudgingly let go of the urge to wake you, instead choosing to lift you up before sitting down in his throne with you in his lap. When your face scrunches up at the sudden movement, he pulls you closer to the warmth of his body and gently presses his forehead against yours, willing you to sleep soundly while safely inside his domain. Safe from the world that hurt you so much. Safe with him. And to be honest, Sukuna felt so uneasy every time you do that because, “I felt like my soul being stared.” That’s what the curse said. To say that Sukuna is frustrated by you on the early stage of relationship is an understatement. He can feel his hair falling out because of you LMAO. But you're his enigma to solve. So, no matter how hard your wall is, he'll get past through that. Much to Sukuna's dismay, even though it’s entertaining, he's kind of upset by your lack of expression. Usually when he's irritated by your stoic-self, you’ll subtlely give him more affection whether it’s physical or not, it’s just more than usual. You gotta prevent a chaos that’s bubbling from his rage LMAO. He's so used to your cold self that when you were suddenly nuzzled into his embrace while sleeping, making him dizzy. He'll embrace you with his four arms (depends on when you meet). He lives for it. And, honestly. who wouldn’t want to be hugged by Sukuna? And please cuddle him when you were set on his lap. He'll be a goner. He's a simple man that needs daily affection and you only gave him bare minimum LMAO. But he deserves it, though, for all the constant teasing. He'll take everything you gave him. He won’t let you cum and you're crying for it while wondering what you did, but you figure he's just venting some anger about something. Won’t tell you what he punished you for and you're pouty still during aftercare. And so, unable to look you in the eyes, with his face in your neck, he tells you, “I want a ring on your finger to tell others you're mine. Or at least a necklace of my name.”

I honestly don't know. Like, a part of me wants to say yes, but the other part is unsure. in the scenario that he did approach you first, he gets rid of any competition or threat that might get in his way. I can see him slowly cutting you off to other people until he makes sure that know you're his and only his or until you're somewhat dependent on him. He probably pampers you and distracts you, so you don't realize that you're seeing your friends and family less and less. Pampers you to no end like whatever you want, you get it. ***he's sick ▸ like toji in the sense that he never gets sick. the only time i can see him getting sick is when Yuji is his vessel and even then it probably doesn't bother him nearly as much as it bothers Yuji. true form sukuna has plenty of curses and other people willing to throw themselves down at his feet to help him, but he won't go out of his way to refuse help from you. he's similar to geto in the sense that when he's sick you can't really tell. he might be a bit more irritable than usual but that's about it. he's similar to toji in the sense that he finds it endearing that you're worried about him, but doesn't necessarily need the help.

***you're sick ▸ he doesn’t take care of you directly but he makes sure one of his servants that he trusts does it. checks on you though and if you keep begging for him to stay, eventually he will. might mumble some shit about how humans are needy. he gets slightly concerned though when he feels how hot you are. becomes a little aggressive if you do anything more than go to bathroom just because you want to ‘give the servants a break.’ if you fall asleep, sukuna stays in bed with you because he claims he doesn’t want to wake you and doesn’t want to hear you whining again. okay sukuna.

***cheer up ▸ is literally the worst person when it comes to comfort so many times you try not to bother him with it, even though he’s told you to come to him. when he finds you upset, crying in the bathroom with a box of tissues, he gets really upset. it’s more because he’s concerned but it comes out as anger. you lie and say ‘it’s just allergies’ but that’s not good enough. “why are you crying in the bathroom? haven’t i told you to come to me when you’re upset?” sukuna sounds more like he’s yelling at you which only seems to get you more upset. “shit” walks over to you before pulling you up from the floor and picks you up before carrying you to the bedroom. it’s not worth protesting about because he just ignores you. he sits you on the bed, even though it feels like more of a throw, before sitting down himself. pulls you into his lap, wrapping his arms around you, so you can’t escape. “what’s wrong? did someone do something? was it one of the servants?” “no” he sighs, clearly aggravated before asking you again. doesn’t except shrugging your shoulders as an answer. makes you look at him while you tell him what’s wrong. “you probably think it’s stupid” sukuna doesn’t respond, instead just pulling you closer, pressing your forehead against his chest.

Even if he healed you with a flipped technique, you already lost too much blood to survive. He looks at your fading emotions in his face and just feels a twinge in his heart as you try to move and say his name. Seeing your whole body flooded with blood, he felt something inside him that he had not felt for a long time. Kind of sadness. He could also feel death in the air. He knew he was going to lose you. He wasn’t on time. It cannot heal you anymore. He could only watch the light disappear in your eyes and say: “If you were stronger, it wouldn’t have happened… But I’m not on time…” Nothing else came out of his mouth and you just moved your head slightly to look at him with blurry eyes. Nothing else appeared. You only saw his figure against the white background. Even he himself began to disappear. It wasn’t his fault. “All right…” you groaned softly through your compressing lungs. “If you were-… If only me…” he spoke as he came closer and knelt beside your body grabbing your hand. You wanted to tighten it, but it was heavy. Petrified and colder. Nothing was like you before. And with a final exhalation you whispered part of his name. “S-kuna…” “I know princess… I know…” Your eyes went dull as his crimson reached them. There was no glow in them anymore like when you were looking at him. Something that made you there for him is gone.
