John 20:30-31
The Purpose of John’s Gospel
30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
St. John tells us why he wrote the Gospel According to John...He wrote his Gospel, so that we may believe Jesus is the Messiah...He is the One that the Old Testament Prophet's and author's wrote about...And when we believe in Him, we will have life in His name...
St. John did not write his gospel to explain everything that Jesus did...St. John makes it clear that he does not cover everything in Jesus' ministry...In fact, he tells us that Jesus did many other signs and miracles that are not recorded in his book...St. John wrote about the things that he wanted to share with others about His Master...St. John must have carefully selected the things that impressed him the most, from Jesus' ministry...These were the things that Jesus did and he was impressed enough with, to put them in his book... His book is different from the Gospels written by Matthew, Mark, and Luke...These three gospels are called the synoptic gospels...The books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke have more similarities to each other than does the Gospel of St. John...
Jesus teaches us the eternities...We learn from the Gospel According to John, that Jesus is the One...Jesus is the One, who was to come from the Old Testament Scriptures...Jesus fulfilled scripture...And St. John was a Disciple of Jesus, so he would see and get to know these things...He was an eyewitness to His Majesty and His Great Teacher, while He was alive and teaching...He personally saw the miracles, and writes about seven of Jesus' Great Signs...St. John believed that Jesus is our Messiah...He is the Son of God...He is the Son of the Blessed One...And by believing in Him, we can have life in His name, and have eternal life...
