48th Annual Joy of Christmas with Augustana College
Wednesday, December 5, 7:30 pm
Students and faculty from Augustana College join the community for this beautiful service of worship and music that starts at Augustana Lutheran Church in Andover. The Christmas story will be read in several different languages.

The message will be given by Dr. Mark Safstrom, Assistant Professor of Scandinavian Studies at Augustana College. He notes that, "Scandinavia is also where Augustana begins! Scandinavian Studies allows students to explore the rich history of the college, from its founding by Swedish immigrants a century and a half ago, as well as participate in its ongoing traditions and partnerships with Scandinavia schools."

Dr. Safstrom’s research has focused on 19th and early 20th century Scandinavian history, with emphasis on the so-called "folk movements" (the temperance and labor movements, and the religious revivals), and he has written on various aspects of Scandinavian-American history, polar exploration, Lutheran Pietism and Scandinavian religious history.

The service concludes with a procession to the Jenny Lind Chapel, which is illuminated by 100 candles, and where Holy Communion will be celebrated to the strains of familiar Christmas carols. Refreshments will be served in Luther Hall immediately after the service.
