Nature photography can be a bit intimidating if you’re a beginner, especially when you go to parks and find almost everyone there taking pictures of the scenic view. But there’s no need to clip your wings when getting started in nature photography. By following a few pointers, you’ll find your groove.

Plan your trips accordingly. Dress for the occasion, and make sure you have everything you need—camera, extra batteries, tripod, flash, and memory cards. If you’re headed to a destination where weather is unpredictable, consider bringing a plastic cover for your camera. Abide by the rules of the site so as to avoid doing anything illegal during your shoot. Understand all the settings in your camera so you’d know how to adjust according to your manner of shooting the subject.

If you can’t afford any of the pieces of gear mentioned above, your iPhone and Android can let you take decent photos during your trip. After all, it’s all about your composition. Know everything the camera on your phone can do. Before shooting anything, appreciate your surroundings and imagine different perspectives.

Bulk up on patience. It’s best not to disturb animals in their habitat, so you might have to be patient with your shot. Don’t get discouraged; waiting a few minutes can be worth it. It would also be helpful to study the animal and its behavior prior to your trip, as this can help you know the best way you can capture it on camera. When you’re out there shooting, remember to have fun.
