Controversial Issues

In this unit, you will be studying a range of issues which cause debate, exploring how writers use language and structure to effectively share their own viewpoints, as well as how to evaluate and form your own opinions and ideas from a range of sources.

Year 9 Unit 2 Golden Ticket Task

For the opportunity to earn a Golden Ticket, choose a controversial issue of your choice and conduct a formal debate around this issue. Forming a debate takes time, you can either complete this in a form of a podcast, a video, a panel lunchtime discussion (ask a teacher beforehand), or a persuasive speech to present in class. This should not be rushed, this needs to be carefully planned.

In this unit, you will be exploring some classic examples of Gothic writing from throughout history, including Dracula, Frankenstein and The Woman in Black. You will explore how writers use a range of devices to effectively create Gothic writing, and then apply these into your own creative work.

In this unit, you will study a range of poems which approach a wide range of issues concerned with power and conflict, exploring a variety of poets from different backgrounds and with different perspectives and voices. You will explore how the poets use methods to successfully engage the reader and convey their ideas.

For the opportunity to earn a Golden Ticket, write your own power and conflict poem. You can draw inspiration from themes and imagery explored in class or create original scenarios that reflect power struggles or conflicts you’ve observed in society or literature. Record a memorable reading of your own poem, effectively sharing your creative vision and connecting with their audience on an emotional level.
