Sustaining Indigenous Languages Research and Educational Resources

簡介 Introduction

全球原住民族語言與文化流失及瀕危,幼兒時期為族語學習關鍵階段,本研究團隊結合幼讀寫研究專長學者,和泰雅族人及美國南卡羅萊納大學Prof. Compton-Lilly合作發展幼兒泰雅語讀本教材,強調原住民知識及族人教育自決,整合族人意見以發展教材。團隊也諮詢本校台灣語文研究所及中研院語言所學者,以提升教材嚴謹度。多所原住民地區幼兒園已使用此教材,研究證明幼兒族語口語和閱讀皆顯著進步。研究同時關注班級和族語教師共同使用教材之合作模式,並運用研究成果舉辦工作坊培訓教師,以增進其幼兒族語教學效能並讓更多教師投入教學。研究成果發表於國際期刊及會議,與國際學者交流台灣振復族語經驗,目前美國南卡的Cherokee原住民社群也運用相同模式發展讀本教材。欲瞭解更多研究內容和下載讀本教材,請點選以下連結。

The loss of Indigenous languages and cultures has been documented around the globe. To combat the language loss, it is crucial that children learn Indigenous languages in their early years. Researchers of early literacy learning in Taiwan and US (Prof. Compton-Lilly of USC) work with Atayal leaders to develop books that drew on the knowledge of Atayal communities. Researchers of Indigenous language instructions and linguistics were consulted to improve the rigorousness of the books and the teachers' guide book. Several kindergartens have implemented the books. Our research has revealed that the children improved in both speaking Atayal and reading Atayal texts. We also emphasizes the collaboration between language and classroom teachers. Using the findings from our research, we held a workshop to help both language and classroom teachers improve their self-efficacy in teaching young children Atayal language, hoping that more teachers can be involved in teaching Atayal language. Our research has been published in international journals and conferences. We hope that our research inspires people around the world who work with local communities to sustain cultures and languages. Currently, the Cherokee communities in South Carolina in US are using similar ways with ours in developing books.
