Start with hip openers.
Derby Requirement: many skills build on top of transitions, this is the fastest way to turn on track & one of the most controlled stops at speed (derby stop). Key for game play recycling / running back / chasing out / boy-band offence etc.
Demo:
'Open the Book' - stationary practice of the movement/sequence of a transition (see building up to a transition above):
point both arms in front of skater's body
twist upper body to point 1 arm directly behind skater (this should 'open the book' their upper body, whilst legs/skates remain planted)
lift the skate on same side as backwards pointing arm & 'step around' to place heel to heel in the same direction as back arm
lift second skate and turn to place - not drag/sweep - next to back skate & bring forward arm around to meet backwards arm (this should 'close the book' as skater is now in starting position - facing opposite direction)
Action:
Practice whilst Rolling on track...
Skaters to practice clockwise / anti-clockwise transitions on each straight
Set up cones around edge of track as cue/prompt for when skaters should transition
Whistle & call from the coach for skaters to practice 'inside' & 'outside' transitions
Coaching points:
If they’re struggling to...
Balance - practice holding 1 foot up for 3 counts before trying to transition
Turn - practice opening & holding 'back foot' behind them ('open book' position)
Step - change technique to a pivot transition
If they’re finding it ok...
Move onto derby stops at the edges of the track
Quick transitions trying to keep on a straight line
Jumping transitions
Set Up: place 8 - 10 cones set up going down the straights/across the hall & split skaters into groups for each set of cones
Action: sprint from 1-3 / transition / skate back to 2 / transition / sprint to 4
Coaching Points:
skaters should practice transitions in both directions during the drill - if not picked up on by skaters specify the direction to turn by cone
Progression: build up the levels of where the skaters are required to transition so that they skate out to closest cone / transition / skate back to start / transition / skate to next cone out / transition / skate back to start / transition etc.
Derby Requirement: ability to dynamically respond & adapt to game play - which can include the successive rapid turns to see opponents/react to their actions
-Stepping & Pivot Transitions broken down to slow steps & callouts of body mechanics throughout movements
Skill: to transition from forward-backward/backward-forward skating by turning on the front/back axle wheels (lifting only the other half of the skate)

Progression:
Objective: to transition from forward-backward/backward-forward skating by turning on one foot - either by pivoting on one axle or by jumping with one foot to switch the direction which the skater in motion is facing
Suitable for L1+ (requires ability to glide on one foot and transition.
Action:
Start by gliding on one foot in a straight line. All weight on one foot, knee bent, head up.
The gliding foot will pivot heel to to for back to front, toe to heel for front to back.
Ues whole body - hips and shoulders and the feet will follow
Use the other leg for added momentum - start with foot behind and swing across the body.
To start with you can put the swinging foot down after the transition. The next stage will involve not putting that foot down.
Progression: Practice hopping transition on one foot. Start by hopping and landing on one foot and then bring it into the transition. See video below.
