Derby Requirement: ability to travel around the track in both directions at pace - particularly for the brace position in the wall or maintaining pack definition
Basic Skill: Demonstrate sticky skating backwards using the lemon/lime pattern, whilst skates remain on the floor - skater looks in the direction of travel by turning head over their shoulder. Skating should be equally as fluid backwards as forwards.
Set Up: Explain and then skaters on track
Action: Skaters on track to practice basic backwards movements
Coaching Points:
Looking over your right shoulder, eyes on track in the distance. Stick you butt out and use as a rudder.
Bend your knees and be mindful of other skaters - slower skaters on the inside of the track.
Weight slightly forwards to prevent falling on coccyx.
You always need to be acting in advance, your legs will start the next movement before it's needed - squeezing the legs back in whilst your feet are still pushing out.
Progression: Moving each foot independently and starting to work on backwards crossovers.
Derby Requirement: ability to quickly move around or across the track whilst skating backwards, such as when reforming pack or tracking out the Jammer
Set Up: Explain and then skaters on track
Action: Skaters on track to practice backwards crossovers. If it is the first time, start with the sticky skating move, bringing the inside (right) leg behind and the outside (left) leg in front in a crossover movement with feet on the floor. As the skater is more confident doing this, start to pick up feet to bring in the crossover and push under movements.
Coaching Points:

Arms out and shoulders towards the inside line - will help the hips be in the right position for the inside leg to push behind.
Bend your knees and be mindful of other skaters - slower skaters on the inside of the track.
Weight slightly to the inside of the track and forwards to prevent falling on coccyx.

Right leg should be behind when skating in derby direction because it gives you more power.
Progression: Moving each foot independently.
