This is a different way of doing lateral cuts across the track - and is more of a juking move for a jammer - than the type of lateral you might use to drive an opposing player off track. It's different in terms of where your weight is and it's a shorter sharper move.
Suitable for L1+
Start with everyone in a circle in a low stance
Wide stance - large enough to be able to shift weight around
Practice slice movement - one foot is the slicer - practice bringing it round in the aggressive slicing motion - really push into that leg.
On the other foot - pick up those front wheels - this makes it easier to change direction
Then everyone on track to practice

Derby Requirement: Use by blockers and jammers to cut from one side of the track to the other - to rejoin teamates, catch a jammer & block them, avoid hits, etc.
Basic skill:
Laterals down straight and around apex.
Stagger legs, turn front foot 90 degrees into track, push & glide laterally using back leg, pull back leg to front leg and through, turning foot 180 degrees to make a 'C' shape
Setup: Make a gate - a narrow corridor of cones, make skaters stagger legs at beginning of laterals, then skate to cones on inside & outside of track
Action:
Practice weaving to either edge of the track (marked with cones)
Follow a leader, coach laterals in front and skaters follow to either side of the track
Lateral through a pace line (must have wide spaces between skaters)
Coaching points:
Remind skaters of correct leading foot, stagger legs, if turning right then right leg forward and vice versa.
Switch weight.
Start with enough speed
Pull the back leg through to keep speed
Keep knees bent. Dip as you make the turn
Hips stay forwards
Lead with the KNEE in front, put weight on leading leg
Set Up: group skaters at start of straight
Action: skaters should picture themselves carrying two large pizza trays, one in each hand - so that they are keeping body up and open forwards. The coach stands at the end of the straight to make eye contact with skaters as they lateral
Coaching Points:
skaters to initially drive their own pace/form
Progression: add cones along edges of the straights as prompts for where skaters should aim to lateral
