Derby Requirement: Picking up your feet and skating on one foot is a foundation skill for lots of other skills.
Objective: Skater will understand the weight distribution needed to enable them to pick up their feet.

Action:
Balancing on 1 foot while standing still
Coach to demonstrate how in derby stance weight is central but to lift leg must be able to shift weight to opposite leg first.
Skaters encouraged to pick up each foot a little and then put it back down.
Objective: Skater will start to pick up their feet for longer and longer periods while skating.
Suitable for: L1
Action:
Skaters on track - start to get speed up first with normal skating - then shift weight and then lift leg.
Coaching Points: If skating in derby direction, turn your upper body into the track to help distribute your weight on the right edges.
Progression: Skaters to work out distance they can lift each foot and challenge themselves to get further.
