Suitable for: L1+
Everyone in a big circle - practice leaning on the person next to you
Load a leg
Lean on skater - you should be able to pick up the inside foot
See one foot plow drills for flat two walls footwork basics.
Objective: Practice stopping a jammer in a flat two wall
Suitable for: L2+ (or can be scaled back to L1 but making sure a L2+ skater is pushing on the wall gently as they will have more control)
Action:
Legal blocking zones - reminder
In groups of three - flat two wall and a jammer in a stationery position
Jammer to start engaged and push on the wall
Coaching points:
Skaters are responsible for their own weight. Make sure you are not leaning on your partner so much that they are unable to move.
Alternative setup: Three lines of skaters on track. The first skater from each line get together and jammer pushes to a set point 10/20 foot. Then the next three go.
Objective: Blockers learn to stop lots of different types of jammer in a flat two wall.
Suitable for L2+ (Can be suitable for L1 - remind skaters to be mindful of who they are pushing on and how hard)
Action:
Skaters set up in pairs on track, 15 feet apart
Skaters at the back push through each pair of blockers (one at a time). Jammer skaters to stop in between each pair and start engaged.
Skaters stop pushing after 10 feet and then proceed to the next two wall.
Coaching Points:
Pairs to practice the timing of the drop
Progression: L2+ - jammers to start ten feet behind so that blockers can practice the catch (L1 skaters could be off track and assigned to a pair of blockers, communicating the drop)
3 skaters - 2 blockers who form a 2 wall, and a jammer (their
teammate) floating a few feet behind them.
On the whistle, wall separates for a count of three seconds, then
slams shut again. When the wall is open the jammer needs to speed
up to get through
Reps = 5 x 3 sec, 5 x 2 sec, 5 x 1 sec
Elevator Doors II
Group of 4 (2 blockers, 2 jammers)
2-wall with jammer floating a few feet behind them. Other jammer 6-10
feet behind.
On whistle, wall must part to let their jammer through, and close again
before opposition jammer comes
Elevator Doors III
Switch position of II jammers
See if wall can hold off opposition jammer until their jammer can come
up, initiate offence & then wall break and reform to let their jammer through
Objective: Skaters will build endurance as a pusher, while in a plow position, and while sprinting, and will build communication between a brace player and a "butt" player.
Suitable for: All levels (L1 skaters to do a non-contact version with the butt and brace mirroring the jammer)
Drill:
Skaters should in groups of three. One will be a pushing "jammer," one will be the "butt" player (forward-facing blocker), and one will be a bracing blocker.
The jammer will push against the butt player, attacking both side but not juking or sliding off of the blocker. The two blockers will work together to resist the pushing jammer. After a set amount of time, the coach will blow a whistle and the trio will sprint one lap together.
After one lap, the trio stops and rotates positions to begin the next rep.
Coaching points:
Blocker players to communicate throughout
Progression: Two wall wagon wheel with jammer starting engaged (L2/3) or wagon wheel full contact (L3)
