Minimum Skill Requirement: to consistently give inside arm whips, holding right arm across skaters body as 'handle' for the receiving skater
Derby Requirement: ability to pull skaters through tight gaps on track; such as when a Jammer is breaking through a pack

Minimum Skill Requirement: to consistently give outside arm whips
Derby Requirement: ability to boost the speed of others on track, particularly to pass onto Jammers as they exit the pack where they may have been slowed by the opposition

Minimum Skill Requirement: consistently gives & receives whips on skaters' hips without pulling/getting pulled off balance
Derby Requirement: ability to take speed/have speed taken from other skaters on the team in order to manouevre around them & take speed
Basic Skill:
Show correct 'contact' position on the skaters hips & failings of if too high (pulling the skater over backwards) or too low (won't be able to take speed/could trip skater)
Highlight the importance of a good derby stance to be giving a hip whip (stability to have other skater pull around)
Demonstrate the position to skate into the whip - from directly behind the skater (vs either side where it will hamper ability to hold/take speed)
Build into the motion/pace of the whip - where taking skater establishes contact with giving skater for a moment before 'pulling' around them & releasing
Finally once released skater should 'stride out' of the motion once released to maximise the speed gained from the whip
Skaters to practice in pairs, both inside & outside hip whips, alternating skater roles
Hip Whip Paceline
Set Up: skaters in a single paceline, little more than an arm's distance spacing between skaters - skating at a moderate pace around the track
Action: skater from the back must get from the back to the front of the paceline only by hip whipping off skaters in the paceline, alternating inside/outside, they cannot propel themselves.
Coaching Points:
The paceline skaters must recover from the whip & maintain spacing within the paceline
The skater moving through the paceline should have clear communication with the skaters within the paceline
Must have ability to moderate speed whilst maintaining motion - when completing the whip it shouldn't be a 'pass through' motion but maintain good whip form (hold, pull & release to take the speed)
2/1/2 Whips
Set Up: skaters on track numbered as '1' or '2'
Action: when coach whistles/calls '1s' then all skaters numbered '1' hold up their hand and continue to sticky skate on track, skaters numbered '2' then hip whip off the nearest '1' skater - either continue with 1/2 pattern until the coach switches numbers to '2'
Coaching Points:
skaters need to have good communication with those who have raised hands, highlight the difference in body mechanics when working across different pairs & importance in practicing across different partners
Progression: skaters complete a single whip on each call and wait for next coach call (allows opportunity to mix up whips & increase skater urgency to complete the whip)
