When creating a character, it's essential to consider their backstory, background, and ambitions. These elements can help shape your character's personality and goals. Think about your character's past experiences, where they come from, and what motivates them.
Consider what you want your character to be able to do. Instead of focusing on specific classes or game mechanics, think about their role or profession in the world. For example, you might want your character to be a traveling cook, an aspiring blacksmith, a skilled archer, or a talented musician.
Also, think about your character's appearance, including their race, age, physique, and other physical attributes. This helps you visualize your character and understand how they fit into the game world. Remember that a character's appearance doesn't dictate their abilities (e.g., racial traits).
By considering these aspects, you can create a well-rounded and engaging character for your role-playing adventures.
Your character's abilities in the game are largely determined by their Skill Sets. Each Skill Set provides a range of effects. For example, the sharpshooter skill set enhances your proficiency as an archer, while Alchemy enables you to craft useful potions for in and out of combat support. Other skill sets like Pacts and Arcanism grant you the power to cast spells and use magical abilities.
At 1st level, you choose and learn your first Skill Set, gaining its rank 1 benefits. As you progress, the level advancement table will indicate when you can acquire new skills. At these points, you have the option to either advance in a Skill Set you already know (provided you meet the prerequisites) or learn a new one.
Note: To learn and use a Skill Set, your character must meet certain attribute prerequisites. Make sure your character fulfills these requirements by the end of the character creation process.
In this example, Jerry has chosen to create an alchemist character who travels the lands in search of ingredients to further his craft. He envisions his character as a supportive figure, providing assistance to those he travels with in exchange for their protection. To emphasize this support role, he selects the Alchemist Skill Set.
Jerry notes that to be an effective alchemist, his character will need to have at least 7 Intelligence to understand and apply the complex knowledge required for alchemical pursuits.
Your character's abilities and potential are portrayed through their attributes. These core traits establish your character's physical, mental, and magical competencies, illustrating their aptitudes and restrictions within the game world.
There are four different attributes: Strength, Agility, Intelligence, and Wits. The average person is represented by a 5 in each Attribute.
Strength is a fundamental attribute that embodies your character's physical might and toughness. Characters with high strength tend to be muscled and thick-skinned, capable of enduring physical challenges and exerting great force in combat or physical tasks.
You gain 10 Health points per point of Strength. Higher strength will allow you to wear heavy armors without penalty and deal more damage with strength-based weapons such as greatswords.
Agility is a vital attribute that measures your character's dexterity and speed. It plays a crucial role in determining your character's ability to perform actions demanding quick reflexes, precision, and nimble movements.
Each point of Agility increases your movement speed by 0.5 meters (1.5 feet) and your initiative bonus by 1. It also increases your defense with light armors and the damage output for agility-based weapons such as daggers and bows.
Intelligence reflects your character's ability to learn, understand, and apply knowledge, as well as their problem-solving skills and comprehension of complex concepts.
Each point of intelligence increases your Willpower and magical burden, allowing you to cast more spells, use more abilities, and wear more magical items. Intelligence also increases your efficiency with arcane weapons such as wands.
Where Intelligence is about logic and reasoning, Wits is about instinct and self awarness. It determines your character's alertness, ability to control their emotions, and influence others.
Each point of Wits increases your Willpower and magical burden, allowing you to cast more spells, use more abilities, and wear more magical items. Additionally, Wits enhances your ability to interact with people and navigate social situations effectively.
When creating your character, you start with a base value of 5 in each attribute. You have 6 attribute points that you can distribute as you wish. However, keep in mind that you cannot add more than 3 points to a single attribute during this process.
Jerry, focusing on his role as an alchemist and support character, allocates his attribute points accordingly. He decides to prioritize Intelligence to ensure his character's proficiency in alchemical knowledge and abilities. With 3 points allocated to Intelligence, he achieves a score of 8 in that attribute.
Recognizing the importance of agility in maneuvering quickly and effectively, Jerry assigns 2 points to Agility, boosting his movement speed and initiative bonus. He aims to act swiftly in combat situations to provide timely support to his allies.
Finally, Jerry invests his remaining point in Wits, enhancing his character's mental fortitude, awareness, and ability to interact with others. This also increases his Willpower points, allowing him to utilize his alchemical abilities more frequently.
With these allocations, Jerry's character has the following attribute scores: Strength 5, Agility 7, Intelligence 8, and Wits 6.
The next step in creating your character is to choose a lineage, which grants your character unique abilities or traits that aid them in their adventures. Your character's appearance and lineage are flexible aspects of character creation, allowing for creative freedom.
It's important to note that regardless of your approach, your character's lineage and appearance do not directly define their Backstory. These details, including backstory, personality, motivations, and how your character fits into the game world, are developed collaboratively with your Dungeon Master.
Jerry decided he wants his character to have a Celestial lineage. Firstly, it resonates with his vision of an altruistic traveling alchemist. Secondly, the celestial bloodline allows him to choose a spell from the Novice celestial school. Opting for Bolster, a spell that enables him to provide a significant boost to his allies in combat. The second lineage bonus, the ability to fly for a limited time once per day, also aligns with his need to safeguard himself while supporting his comrades.
This choice allows Jerry to better envision his character: a middle-aged man with golden hair and eyes, possessing a wiry frame maintained by his numerous journeys. The faint golden glow the halo that shines through his messy hair, the only telltale sign of his celestial lineage.
Background are a representation of the abilities your character has earned through his life experience. When creating your character you must choose a background, it will grant you proficiencies and your starting belongings.
Proficiencies encompass a wide array of skills and abilities that your character has honed through training, experience, or inherent talent. These proficiencies can significantly influence your character's effectiveness in various situations within the game. For instance, being proficient with a specific weapon can increase your chance to hit with it, while proficiency in deception can enhance your ability to fool and lie to people you interact with.
These proficiencies not only define your character's abilities but also play a crucial role in shaping their role within the game world. They provide opportunities for character growth, specialization, and unique interactions as your character progresses on their journey.
The proficiencies page for more details.
Additionally, your background also plays a crucial role in defining the material goods you begin your adventure with. Each background provides a set of starting items, and the amount of coins your character possesses. It's worth noting that backgrounds which offer more coins may grant fewer initial items and proficiency, while those with a more robust initial inventory might provide fewer coins.
Before embarking on your adventure, your Dungeon master may allow you to allocate some of your coins towards purchasing items from a shop or investing in training to acquire new proficiencies. Or even grants you item related to your backstory.
Jerry believes the Merchant Background will fit well with what he had in mind; it provides him with a fair amount of coins to buy alchemical ingredients. He then chooses proficiencies in Bartering, Study, Cartography, and Persuasion, thinking that these are skills he would have learned during his travels.
Once you done building your character, the last step is to finalise you backstory. This means figuring out what happened to your character before the adventure starts. Your backstory is collaborative work between you and your Dungeon Master to see how your vision fits in the world he is presenting to you. Below is a list of question to help you create your backstory:
Character Name:
Age:
Who raised your character?
Did they have a family, legal guardian, or were they orphaned?
What are your character's goals in life?
What is your character's favorite pastime or hobby?
What is your character's greatest fear, and how do they cope with it?
How does your character earn a living?
How did your character learn their skills and abilities?
What is one thing your character hates about themselves?
What is one thing your character is proud of?
Is there a particular belief or value that your character holds dear, and how does it influence their actions?
Languages will depend on the setting you are playing; talk with your Dungeon Master to see which ones would be appropriate for your character.
By default, your character knows Common, a language that most people speak as a second tongue, and your regional language. For example, if you were born in Fantasylandia, you speak Common and Fantasylandese.
Jerry writtes down his character backstory:
Eldric Oakwoods was born to his mother through the fervent prayers for a child, and his existence was marked by celestial blood coursing through his veins. Despite the unconventional circumstances of his birth, Eldric enjoyed a mostly happy and humble childhood alongside his mother. She ran an alchemist shop in a small coastal town, where Eldric learned the intricate art of alchemy from a young age.
From assisting his mother with customers to mastering the craft of potion-making, Eldric embraced the responsibilities of the shop with enthusiasm. However, his content life took a somber turn when his mother fell ill. Determined to find a cure, Eldric delved into alchemical research, brewing potions in a desperate attempt to save her. Yet, as time passed, it became evident that her condition was beyond his expertise.
On his 18th birthday, Eldric set out on a journey to neighboring towns, seeking remedies and solutions for his mother's ailment. Despite his efforts and frequent returns home to check on her, her health continued to deteriorate. Three years later, upon returning home once again, Eldric found the shop closed and his worst fears realized: his mother had passed away in their home.
With a heavy heart and a resolve forged by loss, Eldric sold the shop and embarked on a quest to travel the world, honing his alchemical skills and offering aid to those in need. His travels are not only a personal quest for knowledge and mastery but also a mission to prevent others from enduring the same tragedies he faced.
Now it is time to fill out your character sheet. The character sheet is where you record all information about your character. In this section, we will go step by step on how to fill it out.
At the bottom of the page, you will find a printable PDF if you are playing with pen and paper, and a spreadsheet format if you are playing online. Note that the spreadsheet will handle many calculations for you.
You will also find the example character sheet fill out as reference to help you.
Jerry as taken notes until know of his choice:
Skill Set: Alchemist
Attributes: Strength 5, Agility 7, Intelligence 8, and Wits 6.
Lineage: Celestial
Background: Merchant
In the top left corner, you have 4 squares labeled with the name of each attribute. This is where you annotate the points you have selected when distributing your attribute points.
First, check if your lineage grants you any bonus attribute points. If so, adjust the values annotated before accordingly. Otherwise, in the bottom right corner, you will find a square entitled "Skills, Lineage, and Feats." There, you can write the names of abilities granted by your lineage, if any.
Note: Only the names will fit since the space is limited. It is recommended that you print out or copy the information on another page.
On the top right corner, you will find a rectangle titled "Coins." This is where you annotate the amount of coins granted by your backstory and keep track of any changes due to buying, selling, or earning coins.
Below that, you will find a square named "Equipment." Here, you note all wearable equipable items, including armor, clothing, jewelry, or other accessories provided by your background.
In order, you note the name of the item, then the Defense bonus if any, details such as if it's enchanted, and then the Magic Burden value if any. Magic burden is a representation of how many magical items your character can carry and use at once.
At the top right of this square, you note your maximum Magical Burden, which is your Intelligence + your Wits + your level. On the left of the same space, you write the sum of all Magic burdens of currently equipped items. You cannot have an item equipped if the sum of magic burden would bring you above the maximum.
At the bottom right you will find a square named "inventory", there you can list all other items granted by your background, including weapons.
Above this is another square intitulated "Proficiencies and Languages", here you note down all your proficiencies and languages you know.
Now in the "Skills, Lineage, and Feats" section, you can note the different abilities and spells granted by your Skill Set.
Note that only the names will fit since the space is limited. It is recommended that you print out or copy the information on another page.
Now we will fill the space that have not been donne yet:

Print or copied details of your skills, spells, and abilities. Remembering the full details of every spell is not possible, so it's better to have it handy for when you need it.
Here on the right, you have the example character Eldric's character sheet. This is what the character would look like at the start of the adventures. His background does not give him much in terms of traveling supplies and equipment but does start with 20,000 coins that he can use to buy what he needs.
