Loulan Mummy
Estimated to have been in her forties at the time of her death, her likeness was reconstructed by a painter and is displayed beside her in the Urumqi Museum. At her burial site in the desert, the conditions were so dry that her skin tone and even the finer details of her face were preserved. The Loulan Beauty’s ancestry was traced to Europe, suggesting that her ancestors might have travelled to Xinjiang through Siberia.

Desert Cotton Field
While crossing the desert highway our eyes were feasted with oases of cotton fields! It was the end of harvesting. On some farms the sea of bursting white blossoms stretched as far as the eye could see. We stopped by one that had been harvested by the harvester machine and only few cotton bolls were left on the scrubs.

From Chengdu to Kashgar
Flying from Chengdu in Sichuan to Kashgar in Xinjiang, roughly 3,000km away, is unforgettable! Kashgar lies just outside the western part of the Taklamakan Desert. It is sandwiched between the Tianshan Mountains that run eastward in the north and the Kunlun Mountains which traverse the southwestern part of Xinjiang in the south.
