Essay1: Exploring Kashgar’s Rich Tapestry of Diversity
EMBARKING on a journey through Southern Xinjiang reveals China’s vastness, with its true warmth only unfurling upon reaching Kashgar. Situated near the westernmost border, Kashgar, often perceived as remote, becomes a gateway to profound human connections and emotions. Stepping into Kashgar, whether within the city or beyond its walls, unveils a tapestry of touching expressions, reflecting the closeness between people and the depth of emotions.
Expressions like “the wind carrying thoughts of you reaches Kashgar” and “losing the desire to share is the beginning of a parting” resonate on the streets and in the alleys, showcasing the city’s unique character. The people openly share their warmth through beautiful words, allowing travellers to feel the rich cultural heritage that permeates every corner.
Geographically, Kashgar, the quintessence of Southern Xinjiang’s diversity, is nestled at the edge of a desert between Tianshan and Kunlun Mountains – a main hub on the Silk Road. Historically, it remains the only continuous piece of occupied land in Xinjiang founded since the beginning. The culture reflects a seamless blend of east and west, with Kashgar serving as a repository for what people brought from their origins, creating a captivating assimilation even in genealogy.
The Kashgar Uyghurs, with their distinct facial features, carry mixed genes from east, west, north, and south. Every aspect of their culture, from food and spices to tea traditions, fabrics, architecture, music, language, and religion, can be traced back to surrounding places and peoples. Southern Xinjiang’s long history and myriad historical events can only be truly understood and appreciated in the light of Kashgar’s unique cultural amalgamation.
