Brow and Beauty 

Among the facial traits that make Uyghurs so attractive are their well-defined eyebrows. A local guide told us that Uyghur mothers apply herbal paste to their babies’ eyebrows so that they will grow thick and dark. 

美眉

使维吾尔人如此迷人的面部特征之一是他们浓密的眉毛。一位当地导游告诉我们，维吾尔母亲会在自己婴孩的眉毛上涂抹草药膏，这可以促进眉毛长得又浓密又黑。

Bread Stamps

Dried-out gourds were carved into decorative patterns. They were used to stamp the dough of the flatbreads (naan) before baking.

Woven Masterpieces

From afar, they looked like oil paintings. Upon closer look, one could see the woven masterpieces that they were. A hand-woven carpet of average size may take two skilled weavers a month to complete, a machine-made one, two hours. Hence their great difference in price.

远看是一幅油画，近看原来是用羊毛编织的毯子。一块平均尺寸的手工编织地毯可能需要两名熟练的织工，费时约一个月才能完成，而机制地毯则只需要大约两个小时。 因此它们的价格差异很大。

Avanti the Quick-witted

To my delight, I met Nasreddin Avanti and his donkey in Kashgar! In Uyghur folklore, Avanti was a poor, quick-witted character and had a strong sense of justice. He is loved across the cultures of Central Asia as he embodies traits that are universally cherished. 

机智的阿凡提

令我高兴的是，我在喀什遇到了纳斯雷丁·阿凡提和他的驴子！ 在维吾尔族民间传说中，阿凡提是一个贫穷、机智、正义感极强的人物。 小时候读过的故事给我留下了不可磨灭的印象。 在进一步阅读有关阿凡提的资料后，我发现他受到中亚不同文化区域的人所喜爱，因为他体现了普世珍视的特质。
