The first ESLO is Strategic Learners, which is important when writing a short story or a creative piece as it requires strategic planning. You need to think about the plot, characters, setting, and theme before you start writing. This involves brainstorming ideas, outlining the story, and deciding on the narrative structure.
The second ESLO is Innovative Thinkers, Creative writing is all about innovation. You're creating new characters, new worlds, and new narratives. You're encouraged to think outside the box and come up with original ideas.
Last but not least, the Leaders of the Future ESLO explains how to set manageable yet challenging goals and how to manage and make your own decisions.
My English Literature course has been a journey of exploration, growth, and self-discovery. The last summative assessment involved a critical analysis of various literary works and provided an opportunity to synthesize and apply everything I've learned. We explored how literary devices can reveal the theme of conformity, and how to write a TIQA essay (Topic, Introduction, Quote, Analysis).
In retrospect, the course has honed my critical reading and essay writing skills. I've learned to appreciate the nuances of language and the power of storytelling. These skills align with the MUIDS ESLOS, particularly in terms of critical thinking and effective communication. The course has also fostered a love for literature, encouraging me to be a lifelong learner, another key aspect of the MUIDS ESLOS. The three we mainly studied here were Strategic Learners, Innovative Thinkers, and Leaders of the Future.
First, this helped build strategic learning through the challenges and difficulties, involving analyzing a complex piece of literature, devising a strategy to understand the story and its deeper meanings, and analyzing by reading and note-taking.
Next, the process fosters innovative thinking as it involves creating new connections and insights. Moreover, the skills of critical analysis and creative thinking developed in this course can drive innovation in various fields, from technology to social policy.
Leadership involves vision, communication, and empathy, all of which are cultivated in the preparation and writing for the summative. The summative allowed us to step into the shoes of diverse characters, fostering empathy and cultural understanding. The ability to articulate one’s thoughts and ideas effectively is also honed through essay writing and class discussions.
