At the end of Quarter 2, we were asked to choose whether or not we wanted to do a Desmos Graphing Project to possibly get a better grade. My class and I chose to do it and were asked to split into a group of three to four people, so I chose new peers Nut and Kong.
We were tasked with the following instructions and rubric. In summary, we were to use what we learned on Vectors, specifically Circles, Parabolas, Ellipses, and Hyperbola, which can use their graphical features to recreate and outline a chosen image. My group chose to do an image of Homer Simpson eating a birthday donut. We added at least two of each type of vector and tried to mirror the image with our equation as much as possible.
In retrospect, I think if we spent more time, we could have made the equations closer to the original image. For example, fixing Homer's hands. We could have also added more of the background and smaller details unless the equations would collude with the main focus and subjects.
According to the Expected Schoolwide-Learner Outcomes (ESLOs), we learned and practiced most if not all of the six assessments. First, we practiced Strategic Learners, in which we learned a couple of challenging topics, namely the Vectors themselves, the individual changes to each type of vector, the type of vectors, and how they can be used to graph and show an image. We also recalled what we knew about graphing and what we learned about Vectors. Another important ESLO that was practiced was Innovative Thinkers, in which we learned to think unconventionally, thinking outside of the box to graph our equations and mirror the image. We also connected and applied our knowledge from general mathematics, geometry, algebra, and several sciences to work out the questions, equations, and graphs. As a group, we also needed to practice articulating and communicating, which is the third ESLO, Articulated Communicators. We contacted at school and via LINE to determine who could do what and outline, prove, and finalize everything. Especially due to my medical leave during that time, we had to contact frequently. It also demonstrated our excellence and learning in the Vector topic, and our understanding of vocabulary. Through this communication, we were able to understand each other's opinions and thinking, allowing us to be aware of each other's problems, and countering by each playing to our strong suits and asking for help, symbolizing the fourth ESLO, Morally Intelligent People. Last but not least, in the fifth ESLO of Leaders of the Future, where we demonstrated our excellence in the subject and topic, set manageable yet challenging goals, and helped each other learn and grow.
