The 1971 Dukes were straight into league action, and on a newly-changed track, blew away the Poole Pirates by a massive 32 points. Eric Boocock set the inaugural track record in heat one, with Alan Jay equalling the mark four races later, as both powered to maximums. There were impressive debuts for O'Neal and Bailey, with Mackay, standing in for the absent Kentwell also showing early season form. The Pirates, much changed from 1970, offered little resistance and couldn't provide a single heat winner.
