The final league action of 1970 at The Shay saw Halifax defeat Newcastle, eventually coming good after a nervy start. With Boocock and Michanek away in Sweden for the test series, both sides employed guests, with Newcastle having the better results from theirs, as Airey proved a problem all night, with Middleton having mechanical issues for the Dukes. But solid performances from Kentwell, Jay, Younghusband and McKee saw Halifax take the points. This was to be Colin McKee's final appearance of the season, with his return trip to New Zealand already planned. Kentwell was lucky to escape uninjured when brought crashing down by Gifford in heat 10.
The Dukes completed their league campaign with yet another narrow defeat on the road, this time by 4 points at West Ham. With Boocock still away, Terry Betts and Jimmy Gooch hauled Halifax into an early lead, but aside from a Kentwell win in heat 3, no other Duke could win a race. A heat 12 5-1 from Nygren and Kasper over a disappointing Jay and Younghusband proved critical, with Lofqvist then sealing the win for the Hammers in the decider.
The West Ham defeat left the Dukes 6th in the final league table, a mere 7 points behind Wimbledon in second place - Halifax being left to consider what might have been with those narrow away defeats. Belle Vue took the league title, finishing 10 points clear of the Dons.
The Shay closed it's doors to speedway for the 1970 season as the Dukes defeated local rivals Sheffield in a close-fought challenge match. The proceedings were poised at 27-27 after the impressive Haley and Maxted took a 4-2 in heat 9 - but then the Dukes killed the tie off with two successive 5-1s of their own, with Boocock and guest Geoff Curtis, followed by Lee and Younghusband.
The final action of the season saw Eric Boocock once again represent Halifax at the BLRC at Belle Vue. And it was again a case of so near, and yet so far, as Boocock was edged out into 3rd place in a run-off by Barry Briggs and Anders Michanek, after all three finished on 13 points.
