The Riders - N

Mick Newton: Dewsbury born Newton came through the junior ranks at The Shay, and went on to ride for Stoke and Workington in the National League. Was a regular second-halfer at Halifax, although had limited opportunities in the team. Rode in a dozen matches across the 1975-1977 seasons, averaging around the 3 point mark. Missed a couple of seasons at the end of the decade, before attempting a shirt-lived comeback at Workington in 1981.

Peter Nightingale: Another young rider drafted in by the Dukes at the start of 1983, New-Zealander Nightingale spent most of the season on loan at Middlesbrough. He rode in 1 match for the Dukes - a narrow home win over Belle Vue in the Cup - but failed to score in 3 outings. He stayed in the UK for 1984, but after a pointless outing with Reading, quit the sport.

Gote Nordin: One of the all-time greats, Nordin became the first Swede to represent the Dukes when he was signed in the summer of 1972 to replace the injured Dave Younghusband. Only rode sparingly in the UK after a couple of stellar years with Newport and Poole in the mid 1960s, but at 37, the 4-time World Finalist, and World Team Cup winner still clearly had what it takes, as he racked up over 100 points from only 12 matches. Sadly, the Dukes' injury jinx struck, and Nordin broke a foot in an open meeting at Cradley. He didn't ride for the Dukes again or return to the UK, but carried on riding in Sweden, eventually retiring after the 1973 season.
