Heat by Heat Results - October 1968

The intended end-of-season individual meeting was fittingly won by Dukes star Eric Boocock with a rare score of 14.5 points - the referee awarding a dead-heat between Boocock and Younghusband in heat 15, which the latter needed to win to keep his own chances alive.  Jim Airey continued his fine Shay form with second place, after inflicting Younghusband's only defeat.  But the fireworks were on hold, with a re-arranged fixture against Cradley coming up the week after...

Save the best until last... The Dukes romped to their biggest win of the season and secured a second consecutive seventh place finish with a dismantling of the hapless Heathens. Greg Kentwell scored his second maximum in as many matches, to end the season on a high, whilst Younghusband, Gavros and Boocock were also unbeaten by an opponent.  Eric Boothroyd dropped a point in a surprise heat 1 defeat to Chris Julian, but otherwise was not headed, in what ultimately turned out to be his final appearance.  Halifax rattled in eight 5-1 heat wins to leave the fans wanting more, but they would have to wait until 1969 for the next action at The Shay...

To cap a fine season, Eric Boocock came within a whisker of winning the season-ending BLRC at Belle Vue - having tied on 14 points with Barry Briggs, he then lost a run-off.  Boocock had defeated Briggs in heat 16, and came to the tapes in heat 19 knowing a win would give him the title, but could only come second behind home favourite Sjosten.  Briggs took full advantage to take the crown in the extra heat.
