Every season, new faces join Big League Sports looking for a way to stay active, make friends, and have fun. For one player, what started as a leap of faith in 2010 has turned into a lifelong community. I took an opportunity to speak with Tom Cameron about his journey to becoming a multi-sport veteran, championship collector, and the legend behind those iconic Sonic socks.
What year did you start playing in Big League?
2010 Fall Kickball was my first season
How did you originally find Big League? And what drew you to sign up?
I had just moved from New Orleans to Westchester in the summer of 2010. I'm not from around here and knew no one. One of the things I got into right before I left NOLA was rec league sports. I was playing softball, beach volleyball and flag football (against former LSU players 😬) down there and was looking for something similar up here. But all the softball leagues I could find at the time were for town residents only. And my town didn't have a league, so I thought I was out of luck.
However, I found Big League Kickball (y'all only had one sport at the time) and thought, hey why not give that a shot. It's kinda the same right? So I did and had no idea my life was about to change for the better. I made so many new friends on and off the field. Dozens of games, karaoke and trivia nights. I made connections that got me the job I've enjoyed for the last 8 years. BLS became my social network and I couldn't be more grateful.
Which sports have you played over the years?
I played every Westchester Kickball season from fall 2010 to fall 2016, winning 4 trophies in that time. Then I "retired" when my son was born, but I've come back recently.
I've played softball since 2023 as well, and I think I'm up to 6 championships in 8 seasons now. I've also played dodgeball and flag football over the course of my career.
Do you have a favorite sport?
Kickball will always hold a special place in my heart because it's where I started. There aren't a ton of games that are simple and accessible enough where everyone can play but the levels of complexity make it hard to reach the top. I love things that are easy to pick up but hard to master.
But I'm always gonna love softball. I love hitting. I love catching. I love throwing. I love running the bases. I love coaching it. And so long as I can beat out ground balls to second base I'm gonna love playing it.
I remember when you started playing softball a few years ago (23 maybe?) on Golden Gloves, but at that time you were a new face for me. What brought you back to the league after your time away?
I always knew my retirement wouldn't be permanent. My wife and I agreed I'd take a step back when we started our family. But by 2023, my son was finally in school so I could explore coming back to BLS. But only one night a week, that was the deal. And when I saw y'all added softball while I was gone, that made the decision even easier.
And let me tell you, it felt so good to get back on the field with so many familiar faces. When I saw Gino there for the first time in years I could have cried. I missed y'all so much and I know I'm a lifer.
So I know in softball, you've played with a few different teams and have a decent championship rate when it comes to playing on those teams! Can you tell me a little about that? What inspired you to move around and play on different teams?
It's interesting, I never really thought of it that way but I guess I have changed teams quite a bit. But the nice thing is everyone is so friendly that I can get along with whichever team I end up on. So it's not that I'm jumping around a lot, I just like to make friends and play. Go where you're needed, as they say.
As for the record, well, I like to win! But most importantly I like to be a good teammate and get the most from my other teammates and put them in spots to be successful. No one likes to play on a team where they don't get to do what they want or, worse, get put in a position where they won't be successful and feel like they're letting everyone down. I like to think whoever I'm playing with we have a shot to win every game.
Full credit to BLS here for creating an environment without toxicity where everyone is chill no matter the score. I've played in lots of sports leagues all around Westchester and none has the atmosphere where it's okay to just try your best and have a good time. Another reason I keep coming back.
I know you are famous for your Sonic Socks! Is there a story behind those?
The Sonic socks (and hat) go back to when I was captain of Big Kick Swinging back in 2015. I've always prided myself on my speed, ever since I was one of the top strikers in BLK. My wife got them for me as a gift one year and I added them to the kit since they matched the hue of our blue shirts perfectly. I still wear them 10 years later because I'd like to think I'm still one of the fastest out there, even though I'm closing in on 40 (but about to run the NYC Marathon rocking that same Sonic hat)
They make me 10% faster, after all 😂
From kickball newcomer to league lifer, Tom is a reminder of what makes Big League Sports special: community, friendly competition, and a whole lot of fun. Whether sprinting in Sonic socks or leading a team to victory, Tom's impact is felt on every field.
