As a league manager and ref for many Big League Sports, I am often lucky enough to be at the beginning of many Big League connections. Sometimes they are obvious and sometimes they are more subtle. Since February is a month of love, I wanted to take an opportunity to highlight three different kinds of relationships that I've seen form through this league.
Love was blossoming on the field back in the spring softball season of 2023 right before my very eyes. Briana was asked by a friend of hers to play softball on a team of her friend's coworkers. She agreed to play - a decision that would change her life.
Matt had been in Big League for a year already, having played many different sports - volleyball, kickball, cornhole, and softball. As not only the softball field manager, but his captain, I unknowingly had a front row seat to this organic BLS connection. Now I know why he asked me to play a certain position so much when facing Briana's team, but I"ll let them tell their love story....
Briana's Point of View: I first noticed Matt when I was playing second base and he would chat with me as he was on base. I thought he might have just been being nice, but he left an impression on me. One of the next games we played against each other, he was playing catcher and would talk to me when I was at bat. I still wasn’t sure if he was flirting with me or if he just liked to talk to people. I later found out that both of those are true. A little bit after that, I got the courage to follow him on social media, with some encouragement from friends. He messaged me shortly after that, and we went out on a date. From the first date I knew he was special.
Matt's Point of View: I noticed Briana from the dugout standing across the diamond at second base and I thought she was really cute. I would sometimes play catcher on purpose just to flirt with her when she got up to bat. After playing against each other a couple times, she followed me on social media one night. I reached out to her and we first made plans to meet up the following week after the softball championship at Pete’s Saloon. We hit it off that night and made date plans for the next evening.
My Point of View: Love connections are formed frequently through Big League Sports, but not everyone gets a chance to watch one start from scratch. Having played both with and against Matt and Briana, I can see how special their connection is and I'm excited to continue to watch it grow!
Matt and Briana were engaged in 2024 and are set to be married later this month. Congratulations Matt and Briana!
In the fall of 2023, Josh was looking for ways to meet new people. In his searching, Big League Sports came up frequently, so he decided to try it out by signing up as a kickball free agent.
Around the same time, Jake was looking for ways to be active while also meeting people. That season, a free agent team: The Ball Bandits was formed.
Josh's Point of View: Jake and I were on the Ball Bandits team in Fall 2023. It was both of our first seasons playing BLS. We did not know each other that well during that season, but in the winter we both did dodgeball as free agents and were placed on the same team. Here we started to get to know each other better and were on the same team again for the second dodgeball winter season. l knew that Jake was looking to move out of his house, and I needed a roommate to live with me in Stamford. I have a dog too named Zulu and knew that Jake liked dogs. We had become pretty good friends towards the end of dodgeball, and thought we would be compatible as roommates.
Jake's Point of View: I had mentioned in the past that I wanted to move out of my parent’s place, when his lease on his last apartment ended he reached out to ask if I was interested in moving in together somewhere in Stamford which I agreed to. We had been friends for months through the different leagues already and got along very well.
My Point of View: The Ball Bandits were a special team. While free agent teams can find success and stay together, often the players find new homes with other teams. It makes sense that these two were able to form a lasting connection outside of Big League Sports, knowing what team they started on!
In the spring of 2011, Gino was looking to meet people (and maybe burn some calories), so a friend of his tricked him into joining a church youth group's kickball team. And yes, I am talking about JKI. (Bonus fun fact: the JKI universe was started by a pastor and their classic pre-game round ups used to be pre-game prayers.)
Gino's Point of View: Erik was an original on JKI and a phenomenal partier. So we naturally bonded over many, many shots of fireball. Him and I would dominate the beer pong table at the BLS post game after parties. One time, we spent $244 at the White Plains Diner because we decided to indulge in a post after party party with our diner meals. (A record for two people at the diner, I'm sure.) Dave was the athlete of us, loved being active and healthy. He kicked many homeruns to bring JKI to the championships. So we all sort of rounded each other out.
One day we were sitting on the couch talking about life at Erik's house and somehow we landed on drones, this would lead us down a rabbit hole that eventually landed us at a drone conference in Austin Texas. While we were together in starting Aviated Precision, Covid forced us to move apart. This lead to me deciding to continue Aviated solo and now its my full time "normal 9-5", while working with BLS has become my fun job!
I am constantly thanking BLS for bringing friends, love, and my business to me- all because I wanted to kick a ball, have a beer, and meet some new people.
My Point of View: As a member of the JKI Universe and someone who is personally close to Gino, I've gotten to see him use BLS to form many different kinds connections - including starting a business with former teammates. Gino is a perfect example of how making a simple decision to join Big League Sports can be life changing in many unforeseen ways.
P.S. Gino insisted I add a link to his website here :)

You must sign up for the clash separately through THIS LINK. Here is some inside information: the clash is currently over 75% full, so sign up today to secure your spot!
The late fall season saw the return of some reigning champions from last year! Congratulations to Revolt and Glory Bowl for your wins this season!
