On March 12th I broke my finger. At dodgeball. Now you might be thinking, "Yeah, ok. Everyone breaks their fingers at dodgeball." And you're probably right. When it happened, I ran off the court holding my finger and curled into a ball on the ground. One of my teammates said, "I think Ariana hurt her finger." Another replied, "No. Ariana broke her finger." (I'm sure you can guess who saw it and who didn't.) Who would've thought that moment would have me sidelined for the next two to three months? (See what I did there?)
I went to the emergency room that night. While in the waiting room, I was able to log into the ONS portal and schedule myself an appointment with an orthopedic specialist for the following day. I think now is an important time to mention that I had previously taken advantage of Big League's four year partnership with Orthopedic Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS) and already had a doctor with them from a previous wrist injury. The ER confirmed my finger was, in fact, broken. As if I hadn't already known. Expectedly, I was referred to an orthopedic specialist. The ER gave me a paper with a recommended doctor to follow up with, but it didn't matter. I already had one scheduled.
My broken finger was not my first experience with ONS but it has been the most serious one. When I had my appointment the next day, my doctor looked at my x-ray and immediately said, "Surgery." Ok, he said more than that. But that's the most important part. SURGERY?! For a broken finger? From dodgeball? Great. My surgery was scheduled for the following Tuesday, exactly one week after my injury. The surgery process was a breeze. It was scheduled for 8:00 am. Two hours and four screws later, I was on my way back home. Two days later I had an appointment for a custom splint. A week later I had my stitches taken out. Every step of the process quick and easy.
The recovery didn't stop there. ONS has also been providing my hand therapy. Once or twice a week, I'm back in one of their offices; whether it be for a follow up appointment with my surgeon or an appointment with my hand therapist, ONS has become part of my routine. The doctors and therapists at ONS have helped over forty superstars during their partnership over the last four years - not just me! So, the next time you find yourself in need of an orthopedic specialist, remember ONS.
With the return of Big League's spring sports, these teams will be defending their Back-to-Back status from last year! Can they bring home another trophy this season and keep their streak*?!
*All champions are two time champions unless otherwise noted.
Spring Leagues
The longest commute a Big League Superstar has taken for a season was 2.5 hours. He took the New York City Subway to the Metro North Railroad to a bus to get to kickball every week - for TWO seasons!
This Big League Superstar wore his mint green tee on a bull in Fort Worth, Texas! Where will the next superstar be spotted?
