In the spring of 2019 Big League Sports embarked on a journey to continue expanding their league to more sports with the addition of softball. Softball veteran, Chris C. says, "It's been great to see how much the league and its vibe have grown each season. Without too much awareness of the other sports, I think I can challenge that Big League softball has had one of the quickest paces of development. It at least feels that way. Pretty cool to watch and experience." It began as a six team league on the very same grass fields we play kickball on at Westchester Community College. The league shrank to four teams that summer and then in 2020 it was gone.
By 2022, Big League was ready to try again and brought softball back to those same grass fields. It remained a four team league and in the summer was able to grow to five. Golden Gloves captain, Jenn, joined that summer. She says, "What I have experienced in the past few years of being part of the BLS softball league is feeling like I am part of a community. When I joined as a free agent I didn't know anyone. Now I feel like I know more people that come back season after season and I am always meeting new people as the community grows." That winter, BLS put their heads together to figure out a way to help the league find more success and more stability - knowing it might take some time.
The first step was to secure a dirt field - after all, softball players feel more comfortable playing on softball fields. Due to high demand from the players in the league, Big League went to Westchester Community College and asked for a field. In the spring of 2023 softball was set to go. The only problem? Due to light and space, this league was now capped at four teams. It ran three seasons that year - spring, summer, and the addition of a fall season. The players wanted to play more, and so softball was growing.
This year, in the spring of 2024 Big League tested out a second day of softball by opening both a Monday and a Wednesday league. They ran as two separate four team leagues - an experiment to see if they could make an eight team league. This summer, they pulled the trigger. Softball became the first league to run across two days, growing to an eight team league. Softball veteran Michelle says, "It was amazing to start at the beginning and to start on the grass to now it being a two day, 8 team league. To watch it grow, and to grow with it has been amazing to see and I am proud to be part of it."
As the captain of a team that has been around since the first season of Big League Softball, and it's current manager, I have been able to watch this league change and grow all while maintaining the spirit of playing in a social sports league. Sons of Pitches captain, Nick, kept his team coming back due to the atmosphere Big League has maintained, even through the growth of the league. "As someone who is not very athletic, and not really into any sports, it was an intimidating hobby to start. BLS made it easy easy to start a team, and since the spring season of 2023 we have had a blast! We are happy that safety is a high priority and have seen changes that reflect such! I can continue seeing our team playing in the BLS softball league for many seasons to come."
