On November 16, 2019 Elayne attended a class at the Woburn Public Library on how to decoupage coasters. The Library supplied the square coasters and the cork bottoms. While many of the younger students searched through magazines for pictures to cut out for the top of the coasters, Elayne brought some colorful arty wrapping paper that she cut to size with an xacto knife. The pinks and blues of the wrapping paper go with her living room decor and Elayne has always loved heart symbols.Â
Elayne wanted a set of four coasters so the first thing she did was to select and apply four cork bottoms to the square ceramic pieces.
Next she cut, from the wrapping paper she brought, four sections that she thought looked good for the tops of the coasters.
She then brushed Mod Podge on each coaster and centered the cut wrapping papers on them.
After about 10 minutes, she brushed Mod Podge on the top of each coaster. Then before the end of the class, she brushed more Mod Podge.
Because Elayne's wrapping paper was thin, it bunched a little in places and in order to get a smoother finish, the coasters needed a lot more Mod Podge glaze. Elayne left the coasters with art instructor Shino who applied several more brushings. Since some of the glaze hardened over the sides of the coasters, Elayne cut the excess with a pair of scissors once she got home.
The attached photo is the end result.
The photo on the left shows three different aspects - the white ceramic tile (bottom left), the cork protector (upper left), and the coaster with a strip of wrapping paper glued to the ceramic (right).
This photo shows the designs of Elayne's four decoupage coasters that she cut out from gift wrapping paper. The coasters did not have all their Mod Podge glaze at this point.
