The homeowners of this traditional 1924 home did an addition and remodel several years ago. Fast forward a few years later and the need arose for the homeowners to build a detached accessory dwelling unit (DADU) on the same property. Careful consideration was made to closely match the exterior of the DADU with that of the existing home, but the style and décor for the interior of the new DADU were vastly different than that of the original home.

To make the space inviting and fun for the children, they built a spiral staircase to a loft, transforming it into the kids’ hang-out area. Under the loft space, they built a full kitchen with gray and white colors to provide a neutral backdrop for artwork to stand out.

They carried that same neutral concept through the bathroom and bedroom. An on-site finished hardwood floor brings warmth and continuity to the home and a fun Carnelian color carpet was added in the loft for the kids. The nearly 17’ tall ceilings and large windows make the space feel expansive while adhering to the original DADU size restrictions.
