Denver-based producer/DJ Poni has dropped her second EP of the year! Poni is an awesome EDM artist originally from Vancouver, Canada, but has since moved to the wonderful state of Colorado (where I live, too!). Her music may sound dark, but she's actually a really nice person! In terms of music, this EP is no different. It's a dark-sounding EP, but the beat drops are great! One thing I find really cool about "Hellscape", is that it was released on Rezz's record label Hypnovizion! If you don't know who Rezz is, she's another great EDM producer/DJ that you should check out, but that's for another article! In the meantime, here's my track-by-track review of "Hellscape" by Poni:
Leeches (feat. Satin Puppets) - The EP came out today, but I can honestly see this being the hit song of the EP! It features goth pop duo Satin Puppets. To me, their lyrics make this song sound more haunting than it already is! The drops are great, but when the Satin Puppets start screaming, that's when the song reaches it's peak intensity! This is probably the scariest song on the EP, so I don't recommend it to the casual music listener, but if you're into horror, be sure to check this out!
Leave You in the Dark - This is my personal favorite song on the EP. It's pretty dark, but it's definitely got the best drops. It also features uncredited vocals from an artist by the name of Notelle, who does a great job! If you want to get into Poni's music, I highly recommend this song. I even added it to my own EDM playlist, just to give you an idea of how much I enjoyed it!
Conceptual Reality - This one's cool, because it features Poni doing vocals and producing! Most producers don't sing on their own tracks, so it's always cool when one does! Her voice sounds really good on this song, and the heavy-yet-groovy drops definitely mix well with the vocals! This one also went into my EDM playlist, and I feel like non-EDM fans can enjoy this song. I could honestly see all these songs being good for weightlifting or other forms of working out! Though I say that a lot!
Overall, I was definitely pleased with this EP. It's dark, but it's cool at the same time! I'll be giving it a rating of 4/5, and I would definitely recommend checking out Poni's other projects too! If you wanna see her in person, she will be opening for Fairlane at the Bluebird Theater in Denver, Colorado next Saturday! I have a feeling it will be a great performance (even though I can't attend)! - Elliott Dudoit
