Famous dubstep producer ILLENIUM caused a frenzy on social media last night after posting an Instagram story with rapper Kid Cudi. The story was posted late at night, with a picture of ILLENIUM with Kid Cudi and Jean Baptiste (songwriter for the Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown, and Kid Cudi) in a studio seemingly taking a break from working on music. In addition to the picture, ILLENIUM added a short caption, saying "Epic sesh today before my flight to Asia", referring to his upcoming set at EDC China. Finally, Swedish songwriter/producer Victor Thell was tagged in the story, implying that he could also have a part in whatever is occurring between the two artists.
While there aren't enough details to know what exactly ILLENIUM and Kid Cudi are working on, it seems most likely that the two are going to be making a song together. While neither artist has announced an upcoming album yet, it could possibly be a sign that one is in the works, but that is very much subjective at the moment. Right now, ILLENIUM fans are just happy to see potential new music and a new collab. After all, it's been almost a year since ILLENIUM has released any new material (a long time for an EDM artist).
On the opposite, Kid Cudi has released a ton of music in the last year alone. Since the beginning of last year, he's released 2 studio albums, 4 singles, he's appeared on a movie soundtrack, and he's been a feature on songs by Childish Gambino and ¥$ (Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign). In terms of quality, 2024 was not Cudi's best year for music, but he's done a great job in terms of quantity.
While the collaboration with ILLENIUM might be exciting for EDM fans, it may cause many others to be somewhat confused, especially since they sound so different from one another. However, Kid Cudi has a history of collaborations with some of the biggest EDM producers. After all, he's done work with artists such as Steve Aoki, Skrillex, and David Guetta. So it makes perfect since for him to work with ILLENIUM. This also proves that ILLENIUM has reached enough popularity to collab with big artists, which is very cool.
Overall, this collab has the potential to be very special. Hopefully we'll get more word on it soon. Both ILLENIUM and Kid Cudi are great artists, but since their styles are so different, so it will be very interesting to hear what they sound like together.
