After going through patent research and similar solutions, we were able to assess the pros and cons of other ideas and devices and develop our own criteria, constraints, and specifications that we want to include in our design. We weighed the importance of each category to notate how important they were to us in the long run. We also included definitions of each criterion so that outside parties can understand the standard that we have developed.
Tracks Water Consumption (15%) – can measure and track the amount of water the user drinks
informs the user of how much water they have consumed over time with no more than a 15% error
alerts the user when they need to drink more water to stay on track with their consumption
- Tracking water consumption is important because the point is to have people drink enough water, and in order to do that, there will need to be some way to determine how much they are drinking.
Adaptive System (12%) – is capable of adapting based on the preferences and characteristics of the user
adapts to circumstances and personal preferences of the user concerning appearance and functionality
accounts for factors such as fitness, environment, and health to work optimally for at least 90% of users
- Not only does the product need to know how much water someone is drinking, but it is also important for it to be able to know how much they should be drinking to be as effective as possible, and many different conditions can affect this, and they need to be accounted for.
Temperature Control (10%) – is capable of maintaining or giving control of the temperature to the user
maintains desired temperature for at least 12 hours
potentially gives users direct control to regulate water temperature within at least the range of 6°C to 20°C
- One thing that many people found to be what prevents them from drinking enough water is that the temperature of the water is not the way they would like it. Therefore, being able to regulate temperature is important for the product if it is to be effective.
Functional System (8%) – functions as it is meant to and works as its description claims it does for the user • functions as expected with no more than a 20% error at least 99% of the time
- People don’t like products that don’t do what they are supposed to do, and so for this product to be as profitable as it can be, it needs to be ensured that the product will not fail.
Simple Maintenance (8%) – designed with simple parts that can be repaired or replaced easily by the user
assembly made of distinct parts that can easily be disassembled and repaired
no more than 25% of the product should have to be completely replaced when one area is damaged
- When something breaks, people don’t want to have to replace the entire thing if they don’t have to, and so having simple and separatable parts will make it easy for people to repair parts or just buy new parts for the ones that break rather than having to replace the entire product.
Lasting Product (7%) – has a long service and product life with minimal repairs and a profitable market
service life of product must be at least 5 years
must have a product life of at least 8 years
- No one wants to buy a product that won’t work for a long time, and if the product is not going to be serviceable for a long time, it might not be a profitable product, and so it is important that it is made to last both for the user and for the market.
Versatile Design (7%) – can be used in a variety of ways or situations that the user may encounter
• functions optimally in a variety of conditions with no more than a 10% performance variance in any area
- People will need to use the product in many situations, and some of them may even be extreme, and so it is important for that to be considered in designing a product that won’t have too much variance in performance based on conditions.
Portable Design (6%) – is small and lightweight with an effective grip to be easily carried by the user
product should be less than 1.5 pounds without water and 4 pounds with full capacity water
product is shaped in a way that makes it easy to carry without dropping
- Most people don’t want to carry around a massive thing just to stay healthy, so it needs to be made easy for them to take this product with them to stay hydrated without size or weight being a hindrance to their ability to take it anywhere.
Ergonomically Efficient (6%) – increases efficiency for a user using the product in a working environment
any electronics should have a battery life long enough to last through at least an 8-hour workday
easily refilled so the user can stay hydrated even when special refilling stations may not be available
is designed to account for a working environment and does not add any unnecessary distractions
- This product will likely be used by people in a working environment, and so they will need it to not add any distractions or fail because of long hours, so it must be designed to account for this.
Durable Structure (5%) – is not going to break easily whether it is handled by the user as it should or not
maintains functionality when dropped or handled roughly
can have no more than a total of a 5% decrease in performance caused by external damage
- People make mistakes, and they may drop the product, so it is important that as much as can be done to prevent damage that decreases functionality is done.
Minimal Expenses (4%) – is relatively not expensive for the user to purchase or maintain the quality of
manufacturing cost should be kept below $20 per unit
retail price of the product should be no more than $75 per unit
repairs should be simple to do and not require a full replacement of the product
- No matter how good it is, people won’t pay more for it than they are able to afford, so the product and repairs must be made to be affordable for them, and so, to make a profit, it also needs to be cheap to manufacture so that the price is able to be kept low for consumers.
Environmental Consideration (4%) – is designed in a way that values sustaining the environment • at least 75% of the materials used in the product should be biodegradable or recyclable
- For ethical reasons, considering the environment is important, and creating a product that will harm it would not be ideal, and so as much of the product as possible should be made from materials that will be biodegradable or recyclable.
Attractive Aesthetics (3%) – has an appearance that is attractive for the user to use and carry with them
appearance is attractive to at least 80% of users
allows for personalization so that users have control over at least 25% of the product’s appearance
- People don’t want to get a product that they don’t think appears presentable, and so it is important that the product be made to be attractive aesthetically.
Clean Water (3%) – is able to clean the water inside it so that it stays clean and is healthy for the user
maintains clean water and stops at least 99% of contaminants
is dishwasher safe and is easy to clean or is able to clean itself on a regular basis
- Water is important to get, but if it is not clean, it can introduce other problems to health, so it is important for the product to provide clean water if possible by filtering out any contaminants.
Desirable Flavor (2%) – affects the flavor of the water to make it more desirable for the user
water provided by the product should be desirable for at least 80% of people
potentially enables users to change the flavor of the water to their preferences
allows for users to flavor their own water without any problems.
- Many people don’t drink water because they just don’t like it, so it is important for the product to at least make it possible for them to get water in ways that are tasteful to them and won’t decrease the functionality of the product by enabling people to flavor their water.
