Element A
Working through all of these different justifications helped our group to nail down the problem that we were going to solve. The academic justification allowed us to find statistics and effects of our proposed problem - facts that would support our statement. We learned that even a 2% deficit in water consumption can result in symptoms of dehydration. By taking a survey, we looked to the voice of the consumer to determine if they also experienced difficulties with our proposed problem and if they would be open to a solution. 79% of the 80 people we surveyed said that on average people don't drink enough water. Lastly, we contacted experts in the areas that we were exploring, a nutritionist and an athletic trainer, to get their professional opinion on the next steps of our project and if we should move forward. They both emphasized the importance of hydration for all people. After gathering all of this information and evidence, all of our justifications proved that hydration is a problem for many people and we came up with our problem statement which is presented below.
Problem Statement
Many people don’t get the water they should, often because they are uneducated about how much they should drink or forget to drink. According to a survey sent to students and teachers at a school in 2022, about half of the people drink less than half a gallon. Additionally, research shows that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, and factors such as thirst, the temperature of water, the convenience of drinking it, and other psychological, behavioral, and environmental influences impact how much water people drink.
