“Water.” The Nutrition Source, Harvard Web Publishing, www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/water/.
Summary
Getting enough water is crucial to living a healthy life. Water is helpful to restore fluids lost through daily activities, keeps you from overheating, and is necessary for many bodily functions, so staying hydrated is very important. However, there is no one method that works for everyone in this area. Everyone needs an amount of water unique to themselves, and so not even the popular saying, “8 glasses a day” is appropriate for every person. In general, thirst is the body’s sign that it needs water, but this is not always the only influence. People have been observed to drink the most water when influenced psychologically or behaviorally. For example, water that is served at room temperature or in social environments, regardless of thirst, tends to result in a greater amount of water consumption. Unfortunately, however, other influences can have negative impacts on the amount of water people drink as well. As people age or are subjected to other medical conditions, their body's ability to regulate fluid intake and thirst declines, which results in less water being consumed. Even just inconvenience can be a contributing factor to people not drinking enough water, but it is important that despite the obstacles, people still get enough water because even a water deficit of 2% can result in symptoms of dehydration. Fortunately, there really is no upper limit to how much water you can drink, and people can even make water more attractive by using healthy flavoring methods to create beverages that help them to consume enough fluids. Regardless of the methods, though, it is important that people at least get enough water to be as healthy as they can be.
Reflection
The article very clearly outlines the importance of drinking enough water with statistics to support its claim that even a minor deficit of water can lead to dehydration. However, it is also clear how many factors contribute to how much enough is. Additionally, there are many influences on how much water is consumed by people, some of which may prevent them from staying hydrated. Because of this, it is obvious that some new innovative technology needs to be developed that will help people to regulate their water consumption to achieve optimal results and stay as hydrated as possible to be as healthy as possible.
