Coracias garrulus

The European roller (Coracias garrulus) is the only member of the roller family of birds to breed in Europe. Its overall range extends into the Middle East, Central Asia, and Morocco. The roller can also be found in Israel, during the migration seasons.

The European roller is found in a wide variety of habitats, avoiding only treeless plains. It winters primarily in dry wooded savanna and bushy plains, where it typically nests in tree holes.

The European roller is a stocky bird, the size of a jackdaw at 29–32 cm in length with a 52–58 cm wingspan; it is mainly blue with an orange-brown back. Rollers often perch prominently on trees, posts, or overhead wires, like giant shrikes, whilst watching for the large insects, small reptiles, rodents, and frogs that they eat. The diet of adult Rollers is dominated by Coleoptera, whereas nestlings mostly eat Orthoptera, such as grasshoppers and bush crickets.

This species is striking in its strong direct flight, with the brilliant blue contrasting with black flight feathers. Sexes are similar, but the juvenile is a drabber version of the adult.

The display of this bird is a lapwing-like display, with the twists and turns that give this species its English name. It nests in an unlined tree or cliff hole and lays up to six eggs.

The call is a harsh crow-like sound. It gives a raucous series of calls when nervous.

The roller is a common migrating bird in Israel and can be seen from the late spring to early autumn, mainly in the eastern part of Israel and the Jordan valley. While generally its conservation status is considered as "least concern", in Israel it is considered "vulnerable" with only 500 nesting couples.

כחל מצוי

כָּחָל מָצוּי, הקרוי גם כָּחָל אֵירוֹפִּי (שם מדעי: Coracias garrulus) הוא מין עוף במשפחת הכחליים. זהו מין הכחל היחיד שמתרבה באירופה, תחום-התפוצה שלו מגיע גם למזרח התיכון, מרכז אסיה ומרוקו. הכחל האירופי חולף גם בישראל. אורכו של הכחל הוא כ-29 עד 32 ס"מ, ומשקלו 105–146 גרם; מוטת כנפיו היא כ-56 ס"מ. הכחל נקרא כך על שום צבעו התכלת-כחול. פירוש שמו המדעי הוא "צווחן עורבני" או "צווחן דמוי עורב" (Coracias = צווחן, garrulus = עורבני, דמוי עורב) וזאת בשל צווחותיו הדומות לאלו של העורב והעורבני.

רוב גופו של הכחל צבוע בתכלת, מלבד גבו הערמוני וכנפיו הצבועות בחום ובכחול. אברות התעופה שלו צבועות בכחול בוהק ועמוק מצידן הגחוני ושחור עם גווני כחול-סגול מצידן הגבי. הסוככות כחולות מצידן הגבי ותכולות מצידן הגחוני. לעיתים צבע התכלת של הכחל עז, ולעיתים הוא דהוי.

בית הגידול המועדף על הכחל הוא שטחים פתוחים עם עצים פזורים. הוא מקנן בחורים שהוא חופר בקירות עפר. הכחלים ניזונים מחרקים, לטאות קטנות, מכרסמים וצפרדעים. התנהגות אופיינית לכחל המצוי היא ישיבה על עצים או עמודי חשמל, שם הם צופים על הסביבה, מחכים לטרפם. כאשר הם מזהים טרף הם עטים עליו, מכים בו עד שאובדת הכרתו, מרככים אותו ואז בולעים אותו.

הכחל ידוע בריקוד החיזור שלו שמורכב ממעוף ראוותני מלווה בצווחות הכולל גלגולים באוויר, נסיקה לאוויר וצלילה בספירלת "בורג", ומכאן גם שמו העממי Roller. לעיתים הוא משליך אבנים קטנות באוויר ואז תופס אותן תוך כדי מעוף. את המעוף האווירובטי מלווה הכחל גם בצווחות, הדומות לקולות העורבני והשרקרק. מלבד החיזור והקינון, הכחל לא חברתי במיוחד ומעדיף לחיות לבד ברוב חודשי השנה.

ישנם שני תת-מינים של הכחל המצוי. תחום התפוצה של תת-המין Coracias garrulus garrulus מתפרש מצפון אפריקה דרך מרוקו מזרחה לתוניסיה, דרום-מערב ודרום-מרכז אירופה ואסיה הקטנה, דרך צפון-מערב איראן לדרום-מערב סיביר; ותחום התפוצה של תת-המין Coracias garrulus semenowi מתפרשת על פני עיראק ואיראן, מזרחה לקשמיר וצפונה לטורקמניסטן, דרום קזחסטן וצפון-מערב סין. הכחל האירופי נודד למרחקים ארוכים, והוא חורף (נודד בחורף) בדרום אפריקה.

הכחל הוא עוף חולף ומקייץ נפוץ בישראל וניתן לראותו בחודשי הנדידה, בעיקר בקיץ, החל מסוף האביב ועד לתחילת הסתיו, כאשר עונת הקינון היא בחודשים אפריל-יולי. ריכוזי הקינון העיקריים הם בדרום רמת הגולן ובקעת כנרות, עמק הירדן ובית שאן, דרום שפלת יהודה וצפון-מערב הנגב, עד לאזור באר שבע.

בעוד שבאופן כללי, הכחל מוגדר מבחינת שימור כ"נמצא בסיכון נמוך", אוכלוסייתו באירופה ובארץ ישראל נמצאת בירידה בשלושת העשורים האחרונים. בישראל הוא מוגדר כ"מין שעתידו בסכנה" עם 500 זוגות מקננים בלבד.

הכחל משמש כסמלו של גדוד נחשון. המסוקים החדשים של משטרת ישראל, מדגם איירבוס H125, נקראים "כחל".

ב-2022 חיבר והלחין שחר אבן צור שיר על הכחל, ביחד עם מוזיאון הטבע ע"ש שטיינהרדט במסגרת המיזם "אגדה חיה".
