Triceratops Models

Overview

This page is dedicated to reviews of various figures, scale models, miniatures, and toys of Triceratops which I collect. The reviewer (that is, me) is not affiliated with any of the manufacturers of these figures and does it purely for fun and love for Triceratops, hoping to find the perfect Triceratops figure.

Before we begin reviewing different models and figures, here is a short overview of Triceratops.

Triceratops – General Information

Triceratops is a genus of horned dinosaur (family: Ceratopsidae) that lived in North America during the Late Cretaceous, about 68–66 million years ago. Its name means "three-horned face" derived from ancient Greek: τρί- (tri-) meaning "three", κέρας (kéras) meaning "horn", and ὤψ (ops) meaning "face".

Triceratops was armed with three sharp horns and a solid bony frill which could serve as a shield to its neck.  The brow horn cores measured 90-115 cm long and may have been longer when covered with keratin sheath while it was alive. They were sharp, strong and robust, perfectly suited for combat. Combined with its bulk, this bulldozer, built for a frontal attack, could stand up to the power of T-rex and defend itself successfully in combat. There is even a documentation in fossils record for a Triceratops surviving an attack by a Tyrannosaurus rex . Although an herbivore and usually peaceful, when Triceratops was disturbed or provoked it was a very dangerous animal, capable of both impaling and trampling whatever stood in its path.

Triceratops was one of the largest Ceratopsians, measuring 8–9 meters long and weighing about 6,000–12,000 kg. It stood up to a height of 3 meters. It was as big as a bull African elephant.  It was a quadruped herbivore with a very efficient digestive system which included a dental battery and a sharp horny beak that could handle even the toughest vegetation. There were probably two species of Triceratops: T. horridus and T. prorsus. They are known mainly from the Maastrichtian layers of the Lance Formation and Hell Creek Formation in the northwest United States, but were also discovered in other places such as Alberta, Canada. Had they have not been confined by oceans and the Western Interior Seaway they would probably expand even further.

Triceratops was one of the most successful dinosaurs of its time (and the most common in its habitat) and the last to stand before the K-Pg extinction wiped out all dinosaurs (excluding the avelians, a.k.a birds). Today it is one of the most famous, popular and well-known dinosaurs, rivaled only by the fearsome Tyrannosaurus and the huge Apatosaurus. It was named and described by Prof. Othniel Charles Marsh, with the help of fossils hunter John Bell Hatcher.

Triceratops is my favorite dinosaur, and this why I have created this webpage. An emphasis was made on reliable and scientifically accurate information, but as paleontological research advance, our body of knowledge and general view of dinosaurs, and in particular, Triceratops, may change rapidly.

Summary of models and grades

Sideshow Collectibles Dinosauria Triceratops statue

Sideshow Collectibles: Dinosauria - Triceratops. This top-quality desktop statue is probably the most accurate and finest figure of the Triceratops. The statue is highly detailed, with quality stamped on every feature - from head to tail, from the horns to the frill, from posture to skin texture, including epiossifications and scales. The skin texture features large scales and scutes with small spikes, a feature which I like, as it implies better protection for the Triceratops. The posture is impressive and shows the power and bulk of this mighty herbivore. The statue can be viewed only from one side and has a main direction of the display. It is very big - 11" H (279.4mm) x 12" W (304.8mm) x 20" L (508mm) -  and heavy (15.00 lbs = 6.8 kg). Thus, it is not a toy or a model which can be played with, but a work of art, celebrating Triceratops. Conclusion: I highly recommend it for dinosaurs lovers and especially for those who consider Triceratops as their favorite. Unfortunately, it is now out of stock (it seems that I have purchased the last Triceratops statue). Mark: 10/10. Length ~51 cm. Creative Beast Studio

Sub-adult Triceratops horridus 2020

Creative Beast Studio 2020 Triceratops horridus (sub-adult). I am now the proud owner of this lovely Triceratops horridus sub-adult figure. This Triceratops model is very accurate and I really like it. They sculpted a very impressive head, and the horns are beautiful, long, and sharp. In this figure, the upper surface of the head is coated with a keratin sheath (a hard and tough protein that forms the horns in modern bovids such as cattle and antelopes), suggesting it was used as a form of composite armor.  The black coloration of the horns and frill hampers the 3D effect when viewed from a 2D image. The forelimbs are correct with 5 digits, but only 3 of them are hooved with unguals, the hindlimbs also have the correct number of digits (4). The skin is scaled with the occasional large scutes with nipple-like keels, as discovered on "Lane" HMNS's mummified Triceratops in 2012. The painting is well done and applied with care (no visible glitches or spill-overs). Though I would use less black, the overall result is pleasing with nice combinations of counter-shading yellow and blotches of blue on the back. The red-to-pink mouth is clean.  The level of detail and finishing are high and you can feel the quality of it. This is an action figure with 20 points of articulation (though the joints are pretty stiff), which make it attractive for play, although "All Things Dinosaurs" (UK-based dinosaur shop) warned that this is not a children's toy but more a display figure, so be cautious when you handle it. This figure is solid and stable while being not too heavy to hold. In addition to the figure itself, the box includes a collector's card with beautiful artwork by Raul Ramos and some information about the dinosaur (they should have listed 68-66 MYA instead of just 68 MYA, though). Overall, this is a superb display figure and I am very pleased with it. It has met my expectations and can be considered as one of the finest Triceratops figures available.

Conclusion: highly recommend for any dinosaur lover and especially to those who consider Triceratops as their favorite.  Get it while it is still in stock and in production because this is an affordable high quality very accurate beautiful Triceratops scale model. Mark: 10/10. Length: 26-27 cm (10.5") from snout to tail.  Link: https://creative-beast.com/ceratopsians/triceratops-horridus-sub-adult/

Favorite Co.

This is a Favorite Co. desktop model of Triceratops prorsus. Although the coloring is a bit sloppy, I like this model. It is reasonably accurate (e.g. it got the correct number of digits on the feet) and has the up-to-date skin texture of large hexagonal scales ("Lane" specimen of the Houston Museum of Natural Science). The horns are sharp and impressive and the frill is beautiful. The finishing is high quality and the details are seen and appreciated. This model can be viewed from many directions (though it is not stable on its left side) and is fun to handle and explore. But be careful: as this model is made of polyresin and not from plastic or PVC it is somewhat fragile so a fall on the floor can break its horns and limbs. Conclusion: recommended, but handle with care (not a toy).  Mark: 8/10. Length ~ 20 cm.  Link: https://www.f-favorite.net/english/products/FDF102/

Accuracy: 9. Details: 9. Color: 8. Pose: 9. Playability: 4 (nice to handle, but fragile). Wow-effect: 8

Papo Ltd

Papo 's Triceratops is one of the finest toy-level figures there are. The details are great, with high-quality finishing and shining coating. The coloration is conservative and nicely done - smooth and clean. The overall modeling of this Triceratops is based on the Jurassic Park Triceratops, which is no longer considered accurate. Specially the head design (frill and horns). Improve the head and enlarge the brow horns and it will be much better. Conclusion: highly recommended, both for Triceratops enthusiasts and Jurassic Park fans. Mark: 8/10. Length ~24 cm. Link: https://www.papo-france.com/en/dinosaurs/567-triceratops.html

Schleich GMBH

Schleich 2018

Schleich's 2018 Triceratops. This is a review of the 2018 model of Triceratops by Schleich company. The previous Triceratops figures of Schleich were a complete disaster: they were very inaccurate and looked bad. So everyone was hoping and asking:  when Schleich will amend and create a worthy Triceratops model? The answer came in 2018 and did it live up to the expectations? In short: yes, the new model is excellent! The current Schleich Triceratops is a terrific model: it is reasonably accurate, the head is impressive, the horns are OK (though not as sharp and pointy as they should have been and are somewhat asymmetrical) and the pose is active and nice. The head posture allows one to pose it from all directions, including from both laterals - left and right, which is an advantage for a toy. Conclusion: This figure looks very good and is fun to handle and play with. Highly recommended. Mark: 9/10. Length ~ 21 cm. Link: https://www.schleich-s.com/en/US/dinosaurs/products/triceratops-15000.html

Accuracy: 7. Details: 9. Color: 10. Pose: 10. Playability: 10. Wow-effect: 9. Overall: 9.

Schleich 2014

Schleich's 2014 Triceratops. This is an old model of Triceratops by Schleich and not only it is a very inaccurate depiction of Triceratops, but it also looks bad. They got the head all wrong with a very unnatural and incorrect frill. The legs have clumsy feet with the wrong digit arrangement. The new 2018 model is much much better.  Conclusion: a downfall, highly unrecommended. Mark: 2/10. Length ~20 cm.

Accuracy: 2. Details: 5. Color: 8. Pose: 5. Playability: 8. Wow-effect: 4.

Safari Ltd

Safari 2018

Safari's 2018 Triceratops. The new Safari Ltd Triceratops is better than what it seems from this photo, it is reasonably accurate (for example they got the feet right) and the skin texture is based on the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences "Lane" specimen, for which a petrified skin fossil was discovered. The details are high and include ear holes (behind the epijugals) and a cloaca. The major issue with this model is the brow horns. I can't say they are not accurate - because there are some skulls with such curved horn cores - but I don't like them, I think they are too much curved and lack the mild S-recurved tip at the end, and they should have been longer, too. But as I said before, the 2D image does a bad service to the 3D model. As for the coloring: I didn't like the creamy shade for the horns and beak. But the rest of the body is colored just fine. Conclusion: it is of high quality and accurate but the horns need improvement, but overall it is highly recommended. Mark: 9/10. Length ~21 cm. Link: https://store.safariltd.com/collections/wild-safari-prehistoric-world/products/triceratops

Accuracy: 9. Details: 9. Color: 8. Pose: 9. Playability: 10. Wow-effect: 7.

Safari Great Dinos

Safari Great Dinos Triceratops. This Triceratops comes from Safari's line of toys for small children when the emphasis is placed on playability and child safety (no sharp points or small parts). One can see that the overall finishing is coarse and the figure is light to hold but other than that they sculptured a very nice Triceratops with a beautiful head and active battle-ready posture. It is reasonably accurate (the feet have the right number of digits, though they are all hooved) and it even got a cloaca. The coloring is good and solid. The horns are very impressive and large (as I like to see in other figures) and the frill is good and accurate. This is far more than you expect from a small children's toy. Conclusion: This figure looks very good and is fun to handle and play with. Highly recommended (especially for children).  Mark: 9/10. Length ~26 cm.  Link: https://store.safariltd.com/collections/great-dinos/products/great-dinos-triceratops-figurines-30005

Accuracy: 7. Details: 8. Color: 10. Pose: 10. Playability: 10 (suitable for young children). Wow-effect: 9.

Mojo Fun

Mojo Fun 2019

Mojo Fun 2019. The new Mojo Fun Triceratops was designed according to the latest discoveries, such as the skin texture with its large scales (Lane specimen) and the recurved-tipped horns (as Mark Witton suggested). They got the feet pretty much correct (5 digits in the forefeet and 4 digits in the hindfeet, though in the forefeet only 3 digits have unguals). The overall sculpture is good, but in Ceratopsians, the main focus is the head. The frill is OK but stands too flat and too upright. The horns should have a mild S-curve shape and although I don't like the recurved tips, they are legitimate features and can't be dubbed "wrong". Conclusion: Mojo made effort to create an up-to-date Triceratops and did a pretty good job, though they need to improve the head. Overall it is moderately recommended. Mark: 7/10. Length ~18.5 cm. Link: http://www.mojofun.eu/product/triceratops-4/

Accuracy: 7. Details: 9. Color: 10. Pose: 9. Playability: 9. Wow-effect: 8.

Mojo Fun 2014

Mojo Fun 2014 Triceratops. This was the previous Triceratops by Mojo Fun and for good or bad it is "old school", but still accurate enough for collectors and nice to play with and handle for children.  The head is nicely sculpted with long straight horns, which I like. The frill wraps the neck and has two small depressions hinting for a frill fenestrae though Triceratops didn't have such fenestrae but a solid frill, but still - one can interpret them as depressions that cover a solid bone. The body and tail are a bit too long and the skin texture is coarse and not up-to-date. The feet don't have the correct digit arrangement but despite this, they look OK. Conclusion: moderately recommended,  it is less accurate than the 2019 model but overall looks nicer and its bilateral symmetry makes it comfortable to play with. Mark: 6/10. Length ~19 cm. Link: http://www.mojofun.eu/product/triceratops-2/

Accuracy: 6. Details: 8. Color: 8. Pose: 9. Playability: 10. Wow-effect: 8.

Bullyland GMBH

Bullyland Museum Line 2010. This Triceratops is from Bullyland's "Museum Line" of 2010 and in the information papers, they wrote it was prepared under the supervision of paleontologists from Stuttgart's Nature Museum. Is it accurate? Not fully. For example, they got the hooving of the forefeet wrong though they got the right number of digits in each foot.  And the ventral side is lacking details such as the cloaca. The skin texture is correct, though with a coarse finish. On the upside, the head is stunning with impressive long horns and a big solid frill. The coloring is good as well. Overall, it is a big stocky Triceratops, weighing 10 metric tonnes (the body is "fat" and massive). This was one of my first quality Triceratops figures and I was really impressed by it when I bought it. Today, the standards are higher, though.  Conclusion: Although not perfect it is still impressive and thus recommended. Mark: 8/10. Length ~22 cm.

Accuracy: 6. Details: 8. Color: 9. Pose: 9. Playability: 10. Wow-effect: 9.

EoFauna Scientific Research

EoFauna 2021. In 2021 EoFauna released a Triceratops figure based on the specimen MOR 3027 known as "Yoshi's Trike". This specimen, on display in the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, US, is probably a new species of Triceratops, which I suggest to name Triceratops longicornis after its exceptionally long horns, measuring 115 cm just the horn cores! The model comes in two coloration schemes (see images below): dominant and cryptic. Of the two, I liked the cryptic scheme more: the frill is prettier with cyan and red colors, the nose is emphasized with yellow-orange, and the green-blue legs are also nice, and the color of the body is brighter.  At first, I feared that the coloration will be "neon"-like, flamboyant and unrealistic but the promotional photos do not do justice, as the real colors of the models are more subtle and solid. The sculpturing is very good, especially the graceful long horns, though the frill is a little bit too short. They got the legs right, including the correct layout of digits. The skin texture is scaley with small irregular scales, and I can't say it is incorrect but I hoped for the larger scales with keels that have been preserved in the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences' "Lane" specimen. The underbelly is missing the cloaca, but this is more of a neat picking. The model is accompanied by an illustrated collectors card, which contains information and metrics about the Triceratops. Conclusion: Overall, this is a very nice model and good for collectors as well as for children to play with. It is highly recommended. Mark: Cryptic 9/10, Dominant 9/10. Length: 18-22 cm (depends on how you measure). Link: http://www.eofauna.com/figures/triceratops-sp

CollectA

CollectA 2022 Delux

CollectA  2022. In 2022 CollectA released a new Delux "1:40" Triceratops horridus model, based on the latest paleontological research. It is modeled after the "Lane" specimen, using its fossilized skin print to design the integument of this figure: it is a scaley skin with large black scutes on which there is a process, maybe a short spike. The model includes speculative quills on the dorsal surface of the sacrum and high tail, although a recently published paper raised doubts about this speculation (but it was published only after the model was designed and released). The head is very impressive with long horns and a brightly colored frill. The articulated jaw has very little movement range, so it doesn't add to the model. The toes in the legs are correct as well (3 hoofed out of 5 in the front legs and 4 hoofed in the hind legs).  The coloration is good (although a bit sloppy), with counter-shading on the belly and a bright frill, which both are supported by research. The ventral side also has a cloaca. This is a terrific model, big and highly detailed, and very accurate. The posture is active and mostly symmetric (enabling view from both sides), it shows Triceratops threatening an opponent, getting ready to charge. It is made of unbreakable PVC and is therefore suitable for educational playing by children. Nevertheless, it is also a great display figure. I liked the long horns and active symmetric pose and accurate design. I wish the horns were sharper and stiffer, but this is probably a limit to make it suitable for small children. Note that although it is branded as a "1:40 scale" it is actually more of a 1:32 scale if it represents the largest known Triceratops individual which is 9 meters long (the model is 28 cm long). Review by Everything Dinosaur blog can be found here and high res photos I took can be seen on Flickr: [1], [2], [3], [4]. Conclusion: This is one of the finest toy-level Triceratops models, if not the finest. Accurate, detailed, up-to-date, and affordable. Highly recommended. Mark: 10/10.  Length: 28 cm. CollectA 2022-2023 Melbourne Museum Exclusive

CollectA  2023 Melbourne Museum Exclusive. In late 2022 and early 2023, CollectA released a new repaint of its Delux "1:40" Triceratops horridus model, based on the latest paleontological research.  The color scheme is based on Raul Ramos's 3D CGI reconstruction, which is featured extensively in the museum's publications and media. The sculpture is the same as the original figure and is excellent so I will focus on the coloring. The coloring is great, it is both realistic and vivid. It is inspired by the colors of Psittacosaurus which were determined by analyzing fossilized melanosomes. The colors of Psittacosaurus were brown on the dorsal and lateral surface while the ventral surface (belly) was light brown to cream-yellow, a pattern known as counter-shading, which helped camouflaged the animal in varying light-and-shadows scenarios. Conclusion: Like the original figure, the sculpture is great, detailed, and accurate. The coloration is stunning and has the 'wow' effect.  Highly recommended. Mark: 10/10.  Length: 28 cm.

Accuracy: 10. Details: 9. Color: 10. Pose: 10. Playability: 9. Wow-effect: 10.

Rebor Studio

Rebor Triceratops Trident 2022. This is a display statue, not a toy, of a Triceratops prorsus, called "Trident", and comes in two versions or variants: "Horn of Doom" and "Trident King". In short: they are gorgeous! They are very impressive and pretty accurate but have some minor imperfections.

Here are my thoughts on the models. The body is very impressive and I like the spikey scales on them, on par with the skin impression from the "Lane" specimen of HMNS. The legs are massive but the forelimbs are slightly inaccurate (only 3 of the 5 digits were hooved).

Now let's go to the head - the business end of Triceratops. In the "Horn of Doom" variant the unbroken horn is long, slit, and impressive, I really liked it. But I didn't like the broken horn, not because it is unrealistic or sloppy, but because I prefer to see a Triceratops with three perfect (unbroken) horns at the peak of its might. It would be great if they could offer a variant with the two brow horns complete and unbroken. In the "Trident King" variant, both horns are unbroken but they are shorter (in the preview photo they were colored bright orange but in the product version the color is more solid). They are not inaccurate but I would like them to be longer, like the "Horn of Doom" variant.  The horns are a little flexible but still sharp, which makes them better in my opinion but not suitable for small children (as I said before, this is not a toy). The frill, nose horn, and beak (the beak is an articulated piece) are impressive and well done in both variants. The eyes are little shiny beads, embedded inside protective depressions.

In the production models, both variants are colored similarly with a solid counter-shadow color scheme. The production models' coloration differences are small, with the Trident King variant being more lightly colored.

The models are highly and finely detailed. Counter to my assumption they are not made of polyresin but made from some sort of PVC which balances rigidity (the model is pleasant to touch and the horns are sharp) and flexible robustness to avoid breaking when mishandled.

Both models are labeled 1:35 scale with a length of 28–32 cm and height of 12-13.5 cm, which actually makes the scale 1:32 to 1:28 given the largest Triceratops was about 9 meters long. The models are big, heavy, and massive.

Another small scientific neat-picking: although designated as Triceratops horridus the skull is more characteristic of Triceratops prorsus with a nasal horn pointing forward and a deep snout.

Conclusion: These are display models, not toys, and they are indeed a fine effort. They are impressive with high-detailed texture and presence. The finishing is of very high quality. There are minor issues (the feet and the horns) but otherwise, they are great pieces that any Triceratops fan must have.  Highly recommended. Mark: 10/10 (judged as a display statue)Length: 32 cm.

PNSO

PNSO Doyle the Triceratops 2021. The 2021 version of Doyle the Triceratops is a PVC model of an adult Triceratops horridus based on the AMNH 5116 specimen and the skull therein. Before I review the model itself I must say the whole packaging is very impressive and didactic, accompanied by 20 colorful posters with facts, figures, and paleoart, as well as a user manual with educational activities for children. In addition, the package includes a PVC replica of the skull, which seems very nice. Now for the model itself. It is highly detailed and overall is pretty accurate (they got the feet and digits right) and the skin texture is up-to-date with crocodile-like scales which include some larger scutes with a nipple-like keratinous raised structure. The ventral skin is crocodile-like as well. Now I discuss the business end of Doyle, the head. The head is based on the AMNH skull and has long and relatively straight brow horns, and a smooth frill (without the scalloped epiossifications seen in many models). The jaw is articulated and the eyes are too small. The head is tilted downwards so the horns point relatively low. Although this posture falls within reasonable paleontological accuracy, I don't like it and prefer a different posture with the horns pointing directly to the front or upwards (tilt the head higher). So, the body is excellent, the head is less but still good. The coloring is of the highest quality although the painting scheme is very conservative and slightly dull. Conclusion: Overall, this is a very nice model and good for collectors as well as for children's education. The entire package is worth the money, with a skull and painted posters in addition to the main model. Overall, the model is very accurate but they could have done the head better with a more impressive posture.  It is better for display than for educational play due to the head posture. It is recommended. Mark: 7.5/10. Length: 24-25 cm.

Custom Models by Shane Foulkes

Unknown Custom Model

This is a custom-made figure by Shane Foulkes, where the photo is taken from Facebook's "Ceratopsians group" or "Dinosaue Model Collectors" group. I think this model is beautiful. as it is pretty accurate with high levels of detail and solid coloring. The skull combines the longer brow horns of Triceratops horridus with the long forward-pointing nasal horn of Triceratops prorsus, and these horns are very impressive. The major flaw is that the skin texture should include larger scales with spikey scutes following the Lane specimen. Overall it is a great display figure and a desktop statue.

2022 "Big Mike" Triceratops

2022 Cretaceous Creations of America 1/20 "Big Mike" Triceratops. This is a resin kit model of Triceratops by Shane Foulkes and Passion Charger. It was sculpted after the latest paleontological research, including on aspects of skin texture, which is highly detailed and includes larges scales and hexagonal scutes with spikes. The head is impressive and highly detailed, and the horns are long enough. The legs seem correct. The musculature and skin wrinkles are super-detailed and the pose is active and interesting. The size is around 40 cm long and 20 cm tall. Overall it is a great display figure and a desktop statue.

3D-Printed Model by David Krentz Art

This is a CGI-designed Triceratops horridus model by David Krentz, planned to be 3D-printed, painted, and sold. The coloring here was made by me and is not necessarily the color scheme of the final model.

As you can see, this a beautiful Triceratops, very accurate, highly-detailed, and very impressive. The head - the key component in a ceratopsid dinosaur - is stunning with long moderately-curved brow horns and a relatively long nose horn.  The eye is too small, though. The skin is modeled after specimen "Lane" with crocodile-like hide including some bigger scutes with a process, probably a spike or a quill base.  The feet are correct and well-made. The pose is solid.

Overall it is a masterpiece display model and a true work of (paleo)-art.
