Israel
Israel ✡ ישראל
Israel is my homeland. It is a Jewish democratic state in the Land of Israel (Zion), the home of the Jewish people since biblical times. Rising from the ashes of the Holocaust, Israel is a vivid prosperous democracy and an iron dome for Jewish life.
I Love Israel, it is my homeland, the homeland of the Jewish people since biblical times. It is a beautiful country with warm, smart, and creative people, with a variety of flowers and wildlife, blue seas, and ancient landscapes. In Israel, the Jewish people use their genius and resourcefulness to bloom the desert, recycle water, develop state-of-the-art high-tech industries, have many doctors (both Ph.D. and M.D.s), improve medicine, research new boundaries, expand science, and provide secure future to the Jewish people and mankind.
The Flag of Israel
This photo of the flag of Israel I my first ever digital photograph. I took it with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 digital camera. Since then it became my trademark and avatar, used as my profile image online on various websites (such as Google and Flickr). This is one of my favorite images.
I like to photograph the flag of Israel: the blue/dark-azure and white colors, the geometric symmetry and harmony, the meaning, and the reference to ancient Jewish symbols: the Talith (prayer shawl) and the Magen David (Star of David).

“There is no ‘cycle of violence’. There is a Palestinian side, which is pro-Iranian or jihadist, which has no interest in reconciliation and in peace, but rather in the destruction of the Jewish state. The mythical leader of the Arabs of Palestine was a Nazi Islamist, the Mufti, Haj Amin al-Husseini, who preached to the extermination of Jews. His legacy still lives on. Hamas and Jihad are his successors and continue in his footsteps. The incitement to hate Jews continues. The EU threatens to stop the funding, but these are only threats. And there is another side; the side of the Jews who were persecuted in almost every country in the world, fled or were expelled, from Europe or from Arab countries. They received the right to self-determination and established a state.” –Ben-Dror Yemini, “There are no two sides here”, 2023

“It is symbolic that this debate, which may well prove to be a turning point in the fortunes of the United Nations and a decisive factor in the possible continued existence of this organization, should take place on November 10. Tonight, thirty-seven years ago, has gone down in history as Kristallnacht, the Night of the Crystals. This was the night in 1938 when Hitler's Nazi storm-troopers launched a coordinated attack on the Jewish community in Germany, burned the synagogues in all its cities and made bonfires in the streets of the Holy Books and the Scrolls of the Holy Law and Bible. It was the night when Jewish homes were attacked and heads of families taken away, many of them never to return. It was the night when the windows of all Jewish businesses and stores were smashed, covering the streets in the cities of Germany with a film of broken glass which dissolved into the millions of crystals which gave that night its name. It was the night which led eventually to the crematoria and the gas chambers, Auschwitz, Birkenau, Dachau, Buchenwald, Theresienstadt and others. It was the night which led to the most terrifying holocaust in the history of man.
It is indeed befitting Mr. President, that this debate, conceived in the desire to deflect the Middle East from its moves towards peace and born of a deep pervading feeling of anti-Semitism, should take place on the anniversary of this day. It is indeed befitting, Mr. President, that the United Nations, which began its life as an anti-Nazi alliance, should thirty years later find itself on its way to becoming the world center of anti-Semitism. Hitler would have felt at home on a number of occasions during the past year, listening to the proceedings in this forum, and above all to the proceedings during the debate on Zionism.
The vote of each delegation will record in history its country's stand on anti-Semitic racism and anti-Judaism. You yourselves bear the responsibility for your stand before history, for as such will you be viewed in history. We, the Jewish people, will not forget.
For us, the Jewish people, this is but a passing episode in a rich and event-filled history. We put our trust in our Providence, in our faith and beliefs, in our time-hallowed tradition, in our striving for social advance and human values, and in our people wherever they may be. For us, the Jewish people, this resolution based on hatred, falsehood and arrogance, is devoid of any moral or legal value. [Then he tore the resolution to shreds].”
–Chaim Herzog, Israel’s Ambassador in the United Nation, about the UN Resolution that equates Zionism with racism, 1975 (full text)
“You know, there are moments in this life — and I mean this literally — when the pure, unadulterated evil is unleashed on this world. The people of Israel lived through one such moment this weekend. The bloody hands of the terrorist organization Hamas — a group whose stated purpose for being is to kill Jews. This was an act of sheer evil. More than 1,000 civilians slaughtered — not just killed, slaughtered — in Israel. Among them, at least 14 American citizens were killed. Parents butchered using their bodies to try to protect their children. Stomach-turning reports of being — babies being killed. Entire families were slain. Young people massacred while attending a musical festival to celebrate peace — to celebrate peace. Women were raped, assaulted, paraded as trophies. Families hid their fear for hours and hours, desperately trying to keep their children quiet to avoid drawing attention. And thousands of wounded, alive but carrying with them the bullet holes and the shrapnel אוסף אמרות השפר והציטטות של צחי אבנור © 134 wounds and the memory of what they endured. You all know these traumas never go away. There are still so many families desperately waiting to hear the fate of their loved ones, not knowing if they’re alive or dead or hostages. Infants in their mothers’ arms, grandparents in wheelchairs, Holocaust survivors abducted and held hostage — hostages whom Hamas has now threatened to execute in violation of every code of human morality. It’s abhorrent. The brutality of Hamas — this bloodthirstiness — brings to mind the worst — the worst rampages of ISIS. This is terrorism. But sadly, for the Jewish people, it’s not new. This attack has brought to the surface painful memories and the scars left by millennia of antisemitism and genocide of the Jewish people. So, in this moment, we must be crystal clear: We stand with Israel. We stand with Israel. And we will make sure Israel has what it needs to take care of its citizens, defend itself, and respond to this attack. […] [Recounts a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in 1973] We were standing there silent, looking at the press. She could tell, I guess, I was concerned. She leaned over and whispered to me — she said, ‘Don’t worry, Senator Biden. We have a secret weapon here in Israel’ — my word this is what she said — ‘We have no place else to go.’ We have no place else to go. […] For 75 years, Israel has stood as the ultimate guarantor of security of Jewish people around the world so that the atrocities of the past could never happen again.” –President of the United States Joe Biden’s speech on the 7th October 2023 Palestinian mass-terrorist attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip in which more than 1,300 Israelis were slaughtered (source)
“As Jews around the world gather together to light the Hanukkah candles, let us all remember this: 22 centuries ago, the Maccabees rose up and fought for the freedom of the Jewish people. They were outnumbered, they were out-armed, and the odds were very much against them. But they won. Those mighty Maccabees reclaimed the destroyed Temple in Jerusalem. They a found a single jar of oil among the destruction with which they lit the Menorah. That light didn’t just burn for 8 nights, it’s been burning for 2,000 years, and shines bright until today. Our light is a symbol of hope, a hope that for centuries has survived among the Jewish people and a hope that for centuries has helped the Jewish people survive. Our hope is not yet lost. Even during the worst tragedies the hope of the Jewish people remained. And it is that hope that has turned Israel into a beacon of light, a powerhouse of technology and innovation, and a lighthouse in a sea of darkness. So as we light our candles this Hanukkah we can all be proud that Israel has become the Maccabees of modern time. We may be small, we may be outnumbered, but we have faith, we have audacity, and we won’t accept defeat. Israel is a proof that freedom can prevail over tyranny, hope can prevail over despair, and light can prevail over darkness: a bit of light dispels much darkness. And our light will never extinguish.” –Naftali Bennett, Prime Minister of Israel, Hanukkah 2022 (video source)
