Royal Observer Corp - Easy 2 Post (Donington) - Number 11 Group
The crew of Easy 2 post were called for duty in August 1939 and the post was manned continuously until the end of hostilities.
No outstanding incidents occurred during that time but many enemy aircraft were tracked, bombing heard and fires seen. Donington came through unscathed although there were a few scattered bombs in adjoining parishes.
The post was in a rundown and dilapidated farm in Days Lane, so it was not difficult to make the post harmonise with the surroundings. The post was planned to be at ground level but was then raised on ten-foot-high stilts to enable observers to see over a blind spot caused by the houses which had just been built. The expense of raising the platform was donated by a member Mr A K Wright (Farmer) who eventually left the R.O.C. to take up command of the local Home Guard. The platform had shelters at either end and raised glass screens. A coke stove fitted into one of the shelters provided some comfort in bad weather.
The duties of Head Observer in the first instant, were carried out by Graham Sharp.
The Headmaster of the local school provided a room for meetings and training.
After hostilities, members were invited to visit one of the many RAF bases in Lincolnshire.
