The Donington gas works was established on the site to the south of the High Street in 1856, with the aim of providing gas to the town. The works were built on what was originally named Gas House Lane, later renamed to Goxhill Avenue. The Donington Gas Company was registered on the 14th of April 1856, with construction on the site being completed and the delivery of the first gas to users in the town by the middle of October of that year. Annual production at the site is recorded as being fairly constant throughout the years of operation, with production thought to have stopped by the 31st of March 1931.
