Now I can not claim to have come up with this idea, I grabbed it from this video here by Great Chesterford Junction Model Railway. so thank you Gormo, you inspired me!
This page shows the process I use to make 4mm scale bushes. These simple bushes can really help hedges come into their own.
Materials
I use the following materials:
Jute string
Hot glue
Brown aerosol paint
[Optional] 2mm brown static grass
Finely sieved sawdust pigmented the colour of the bushes leaves
Hold a bundle of string or rope and cut a short length, keeping hold of the bundle.
Onto some plastic or the glossy side of a cereal packet, place a blob of hot glue and thrust the cut end into it until the glue hardens
Repeat until you have enough bushes
Trim the bushes to the desired shape
Spray the bushes with brown paint (aerosol or from airbrush)
Leave to dry
Add optional static grass for fine twigs
Using PVA glue diluted very heavily with water and a dash of detergent, drip small drips onto the poly fibre and the just string bushes. You may need a squirt or IPA to break the water tension.
Sprinkle the finely sieved leaves on to the glue droplets
Fix with cheap hairspray (not forgetting to mask other areas)
Sprinkle more finely sieved leaves on to the glue droplets
Fix again with cheap hairspray (not forgetting to mask other areas)
