Avoid These Diabetic Traps

As a diabetic, it may feel like there are so many things to constantly be thinking of and managing. And it’s true, you won’t ever be able to just eat anything you want with abandon, but instead of viewing this as a negative, view it as a positive.

Since you will have to be more conscious of your diet, this is a great opportunity to make sure that you are fueling your body with the wholesome nutrition you need.

This said, there are a few traps that diabetics still fall into that must be avoided. Let’s go over what these are so that you can steer clear.

1. Not Counting Calories

The first mistake you need to be avoiding at all costs is not counting your calories. While it’s great to pay attention to the types of foods you are eating and make sure that you aren’t consuming sugary foods, you do need to be aware of how much you are eating.

Eat too much and this will just put you on a fast track to weight gain. Not to mention, if you eat enough of even slower burning carbohydrates, this can still have quite a significant impact on blood glucose levels.

It’s important to not just consider what you are eating, but how much at all times.

2. Lacking Vegetables

Next, you’ll also want to make sure that you are taking in enough vegetables as well. Another big problem is neglecting these nutritional gems for favor of more ‘convenient’ foods instead.

While vegetables may take a little more time to cook and prepare, eating them is a must. They will provide you with a good dose of fiber, helping to stabilize blood glucose levels, not mention adding a high amount of bulk to each meal.

This can then help you feel less restricted on your diet plan and less like you are in fact dieting.

3. Going Very Low Carb

Finally, another thing that you need to be careful to avoid as a diabetic is going too low carb. Remember, your body needs carbs, especially if you are active. Being a diabetic doesn’t mean you can’t eat them, it just means you need to be more regulated when you do.

Carbohydrates will provide your body with a number of important vitamins and minerals that you must take in on a day to day basis, so skipping them entirely should not be an option.

Furthermore, if you think that any low carb food means a safe food to eat, you’ll want to rethink that as well. Many low carb foods out there are terribly unhealthy still due to all the processed ingredients they contain.

Don’t let your nutritional sense fly out the window just because you are trying to manage your carbohydrate intake.

So keep these traps in mind as you move through your diet plan.
