The 1901-1906 Jewish Encyclopedia explains, the Law of Moses required death by stoning for anyone found guilty of "Blasphemy, idolatry, Sabbath- breaking, witchcraft, prostitution by a betrothed virgin, or deceiving her husband at marriage as to her chastity (Deut. xxii. 21), and the rebellious son are, according to the Pentateuchal laws, to be punished with death by stoning (see Leviticus 24:11-23)... The Bible speaks also of hanging (Deut. xxi. 22), but, according to the rabbinical interpretation, not as a mode of execution, but rather of exposure after death (Sanh. vi. 4, 75b)." - Capital Punishment >> Modes of Punishment

Wadi Qumran Cave 11 was discovered in 1956 and yielded 21 texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls, some of which were quite lengthy. The Temple Scroll, so called because more than half of it pertains to the construction of the Temple of Jerusalem, was found in Cave 11 and is by far the longest scroll. It is 26.7 feet (8.15 m) long; its original length may have been over 28 feet (8.75 m).
The Temple Scroll was regarded by scholar Yigael Yadin as "The Torah According to the Essenes" - Wikipedia, Cave 11
This helps explain why the cross is so often called "the tree" in the original Greek of the New Testament (the cross is called “the tree” in Acts 5:30, Acts 10:39, Acts 13:29; Gal. 3:13; and 1 Pet. 2:24) - SRC
"...if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance."
And their leader [Gaddianton Robbers], Zemnarihah, was taken and hanged upon a tree, yea, even upon the top thereof until he was dead. And when they had hanged him until he was dead they did fell the tree to the earth, and did cry with a loud voice, saying: May the Lord preserve his people in righteousness and in holiness of heart, that they may cause to be felled to the earth all who shall seek to slay them because of power and secret combinations, even as this man hath been felled to the earth.

And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
And we are witnesses of all things which [Jesus] did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree
And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.
The Greek terms for “cross” and “crucify”can and do at times simply refer to the idea of being affixed to a tree and that the Romans sometimes used trees in their crucifixions. All these observations as a whole prevent us from concluding that Christ was crucified on a wooden post. – Ernest L. Martin, The Secrets of Golgatha, p. 193-194
Then Judas, who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.
And they said unto him, What is that to us? See thou to it; thy sins be upon thee.
...
And the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, It is not lawful for to put them in the treasury because it is the price of blood.
And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went, and hanged himself on a tree. And straightway he fell down, and his bowels gushed out, and he died.
"...when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died"

According to Cortés, Montezuma related a story of an ancient Aztec ruler who departed long ago with a promise of returning to "conquer this land, and reduce [the Aztecs] to subjection as his vassals." Montezuma said he believed that the Spanish were those prophesied conquerors, and even recognized the king of Spain as "our natural sovereign." Montezuma supposedly says, 'I've been waiting for you. All I've been doing is holding this seat for you, the representative of our true natural lord...'"
