The family Chernetidae can be considered cosmopolitan, represented by 701 valid species, the most diverse of the order, commonly occurring under the bark of trees, in litter, in caves, and in a variety of other habitats. Although they constitute a quarter of the generic diversity, chernetids occupy a wide variety of terrestrial habitats including litter, soil, humus, caves, and under the bark of trees and trunks. Some species have close associations with other animals, such as commensals in the burrows and fur of mammals, in the nests and feathers of birds, or in arthropods.
