This group of Amblypygi is distributed being abundant in the American continent (some endemic genera), representatives in Africa, Indonesia and Europe.
They commonly occur in litter, under rocks or logs, some species live in ant nests or caves, and large species live in large, hollow trees, rock crevices, and caves.
The family is represented by four current genera and two fossils, grouping 71 species. In Colombia, 17 species have been recorded and in Córdoba only Phrynus barbadensis has been reported (Pocock, 1893).
