ranscript
there's this book by Mark Twain called
the mysterious stranger now this book
was never officially
released I believe they discovered it
after he died so he was changing it and
altering and making you know adding
characters removing chapters and so on
and so forth but eventually when he died
they discovered it and they decided to
release it to the public it's got It's
short yeah I have a copy of it right
here it's pretty thin mysterious
stranger but
um wow is it an incredible book I I read
it recently and it's amazing it's about
a five hour read if you're listening on
Audible there's a reason I want to get
to this and it relates to something very
important in my opinion I want to read
part of the last chapter to you but I
want you to have some context for it
before we get there so I'm going to give
you the context of the book first
basically let me just give you like the
basic premise of this this book so it
starts out with some boys playing in the
woods it's set in the 1500s and it was
written in the 1890s or early 1900s
I mean 1890 to 1902 somewhere in that
vicinity is when it was written so it
takes place in I believe Austria in the
1500s right and these boys are sitting
in the woods three of them sitting
together hanging out
and it's kind of cold when a stranger
comes out of the woods and this stranger
is beautiful
he has beautiful clothing on his face is
pretty this is a depiction of him right
here right
on screen so he walks out of the woods
and he sits with them
and he tells these boys
that he just wants to hang out and they
and one of them was thinking to himself
wow I'm really cold I may be getting
this slightly wrong but this is the
basic idea one of the boys is thinking
to himself wow it's really cold and this
this mysterious stranger
heard His Thoughts
and said you're cold well I'll light a
fire then
and he leaned down and blew on this
fireplace it had been out for like ever
and a fire started just like that one
breath and the fire started so the boys
are naturally you know like holy
what just happened right they sit down
and they said please show us more like
they were about to run from him and he
asked him not to run so they said well
show us more stuff that you can do you
know he said okay but you have to
promise not to run or not to be afraid
or whatever and they said we promise we
won't run we won't be afraid
and he said okay but you remember your
promise and he gets dirt from the ground
and mixes it with some water and creates
little people out of it
like tiny little
people figurines and the boys were
forming out uh Hal badiers you know
horses and stuff like that the new the
mysterious stranger created like a dove
out of this clay type of stuff and
released it into the air and it flew
away
when he made the people as he sat them
down
the the little people stood up and
started walking around and building a
castle
the women that he created were getting
the stuff for Mortar and you know mixing
it together and bringing it up to the
men who were laying down the bricks that
were just produced and everything this
character is sitting there talking to
the boys casually and the boys say
what's your name
and the mysterious stranger says Satan
the Fallen one was my uncle and he was
an outlier he wasn't like everybody else
I am an angel
rather than a you know a devil like
Satan is and so the boys are sitting
there talking to him when a couple of
women that he built out of clay that now
that were now actual real human beings
a couple of the women were fighting with
each other over something I don't know
what I don't think the book specified
they were fighting
and it came to blows they were like
pulling each other's hair and yelling
and stuff when Satan
looked over and smacked his hand down on
them and killed them
and pulled out a handkerchief and wiped
the blood off of his hands and continued
talking to them as though everything was
normal the boys were very obviously like
deeply disturbed by what they had just
seen right
he didn't seem to care at all that he
just murdered a couple of people and he
continues talking and as he's talking to
these boys
the boys see one of the little creatures
that were created
out of this dirt I mean they're actual
human beings with blood and and emotions
and everything
they see
a priest A Little Priest walk up and
stand in front of the Grave praying and
the women's husbands are crying in front
of the grave and everything these were
like real people that were really
affected by what Satan just did and he
didn't care he's paying zero attention
to it they're like deeply disturbed by
what happened so anyways middle middle
there's a bunch of stuff and it they
come to find that
Satan can grant them things like he can
give them he gave them a bunch of money
or he gave a bunch of money to the the
pastor that came by the pastor had lost
his wallet and Satan was invisible to
this pastor but not to the boys and he
helped him find or he put the wallet
down where the pastor would find it
Satan did
and in the wallet he discovered that he
had the equivalent of like twenty
thousand dollars worth of gold in it
where he only had like a little bit
before and he was like whose money is
this I don't know where this came from
you know and it was like a blessing and
the boy said no it's your money it's
yours you you should keep it
they were forbidden from talking about
Satan at all they wanted to they tried
to but their mouths would not form the
words
because Satan prevented it
so anyways they told him he should keep
the money because it was in his wallet
and everything right well it's a
double-edged sword so everything that
Satan did for you like give you money
ended badly
like Satan
gave the pastor this money but then the
astrologer from town showed up and
claimed that it was his money that was
stolen so Satan took the money from the
astrologer and gave it to the pastor and
it caused a huge mass passer Goes to
Jail blah blah blah so everything that
Satan did for them ended
in a not quite expected way well anyways
Satan continued to visit
the boys it's written in first person so
it's being written as though Mark Twain
was one of the boys and he was telling
like a childhood experience so the main
character the kid
is saying that Satan used to come to him
at night and they would go to China and
oh you know far off lands and see
incredible buildings and things until
slowly but surely
the visits got fewer and further between
and one day
Satan shows up and says I'm going away
I'm not visiting anymore I have other
things to do in the universe and the boy
says what why no I I don't want that
there's a lot in between what I just
explained
um basically I explained part of chapter
one and part of chapter 11. so you
should still go read the book because
it's incredible the book is
let me just get to chapter 11 because
there's one excerpt that I wanted to
read that I find deeply fascinating
so the boy says to Satan and you're
going away and will not come back
anymore
Satan says yes we've comraded lung
together and it's been pleasant pleasant
for both but I must go now and we shall
not see each other anymore
in this life Satan but in another
we shall meet in another surely
then in all tranquility and soberly he
made the strange answer there is no
other
a subtle influence blew upon my spirit
from his bringing with it a vague dim
but blessed and hopeful feeling that the
incredible words might be true even must
be true have you never suspected this
Theodore no how could I but if it can
only be true it is true August of
thankfulness Rose in my breast but a
doubt checked it before it could issue
in words and I said but but
we've seen the future life Cena in its
actuality and so it was a vision it had
no existence said Satan
I could hardly breathe for the great
hope that was struggling in me a vision
a life itself is only a vision a dream
said Satan it was electrical by God I
had had that very thought a thousand
times in my musings nothing exists all
is a dream God man the world the Sun the
moon the Wilderness of stars a dream all
a dream they have no existence nothing
exists save empty space and you said
Satan I
and you are not you you have nobody no
blood no bones you are but a thought
I myself have no existence I am but a
dream your dream creature of your
imagination in a moment you will have
realized this and you will banish me
from your visions and I shall dissolve
into the nothingness out of which you
made me
I'm perishing already I'm falling I'm
passing away in a little while you'll be
alone in shoreless space to wander its
Limitless solitudes without friend or
comrade forever for you will remain a
thought the only existent thought and by
your nature inextinguishable
indestructible
but I your poor servant have revealed
you to yourself and set you free dream
other dreams and better and here's the
section that I really wanted to get to
this is Satan speaking by the way
strange strange you should not have
suspected years ago centuries ages eons
ago for you have existed companionless
through all the eternities strange
indeed that you should not have
suspected that your universe and its
contents were only dreams Visions
fiction
strange because they're so frankly and
hysterically insane like all dreams a
God who could make good children as
easily as bad yet preferred to make bad
ones who could have made every one of
them happy yet never made a single happy
one who made them prize their bitter
life yet Stingily cut it short who gave
his angels Eternal happiness unearned
yet required his other children to earn
it who gave his angels painless lives
yet cursed his other children with
biting miseries and maladies of Mind and
Body who melds Justice and invented hell
who melds mercy and invented hell Mal's
golden rules and forgiveness multiplied
by Seventy Times Seven and invented hell
whom allows morals to other people and
has none himself who frowns upon crimes
yet commits them all who created man
without invitation then tries to shuffle
the responsibility for man's act upon
man instead of honorably placing it
where it belongs upon himself and
finally with altogether Divine
obtuseness invites this poor abused
slave to worship Him
you perceive now that these things are
all impossible except in a dream you
perceive that they're the pure and
purile insanities the silly creations of
an imagination that is not conscious of
its freaks in a word that they are a
dream and you are the maker of it the
dream marks are all present you should
have recognized them earlier so that is
an excerpt from
the mysterious stranger by Mark Twain
and I'm telling you guys it the book is
so good honestly I thought that books
that were written before a certain time
period say 1980 were kind of dated and
hard to get through but this was written
125 years ago or or so somewhere in
there and it still stands up man it is
such a good book
you should really read the whole thing
this was written at the end of Mark
Twain's life sometime in his 60s or 70s
I believe
when he was facing the fact that he was
you know he's facing his mortality
and this was the the result that came
from him trying to Grapple with his
mortality it is a phenomenally good book
and it deserves a read from everybody
again I told you bits and pieces from
chapter one and bits and pieces from
chapter 11. there are nine chapters in
between all of that that you can still
read and it is worth it
so give this book a read for real
it's fantastic now that's a villain's
monologue I'm gonna love right exactly
God could have made Happy children just
as easily as he made sad ones yet he
chose to make sad ones he gave his love
freely to Angels but required his other
creations to earn it and with Divine
obtuseness requires this poor beaten
slave to worship him I mean I just
couldn't say it better myself I just
love it dude it's just a fantastic book
and again that's not even that that's
probably my favorite part but there's a
lot of stuff in there like that you need
to read it
and it's uh it's in the public domain
because it's so old so it's Dirt Cheap
you can probably get it for free in a
lot of places I don't think it's a
villains monologue I mean what was just
said was a villain's monologue but
overall the whole book is not a
villain's monologue and Satan in the
book is not even a villain
Satan is a like a good guy really that
just shows these boys incredible things
and seems to not really understand
moral compasses that's what the whole
book is about Satan trying to understand
moral compasses like morality is
something that Mortals deal with
Immortals like himself Immortals like
Angels don't lower themselves to care
about morality that's kind of the or the
overarching theme in the book
morality is
worthless to anybody except for humans
it's just got a really interesting
social commentary
to it and you should absolutely read it
Mark Twain was
a master writer Master writer you know
what other book you should read while
you're at it you should read the death
stalker series by Simon R green all of
them you can't stop at the first one
because the story doesn't get good until
book number two
you have to read those and then when you
do let me know and we'll discuss it at
length favorite book
of all time the death stalker series all
eight of them in my opinion the
deathstalker series
is on the list of the best stories ever
written in humanity ever better than a
Shakespeare better than Plato better
than anybody I guess Plato wasn't a
fiction writer but the point is
it's the best story ever written or it's
up there it's top ten I'll give it top
ten in my humble opinion
so you gotta read it death stalker and
read the mysterious stranger
