Sermon 1
Sermon Description
1st Sermon
Divine Law
What is Law? This sermon contrasts God's perfect moral law, with the Old Testament civil and ceremonial laws of the Bible to the laws of modern day society in 2016 in the USA. Overview of the history of the sovereignty of man's law from the Democracy of the Greeks to the Republic of the Romans all the way to the Constitutional Republic of the United States of America.
This sermon explaining the terms Law, Morality and Justice. While discussing law, morality and justice, it is important to define all these terms. And while it may not possible to define the concept of moral justice in respects to the law, this sermon seeks to examine the purpose and intention of the law. This is essentially a philosophical question, which only God and answer.

Sermon 1.1
God's Moral Law....
A word from God's Holy Scriptures Psalms 19:7 about the perfection of Divine Law. First in English Standard Version and then in the Good News. The slightly different wording speaks clearly...
Psalms 19:7 ESV
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
Psalms 19:7 GNT
The law of the Lord is perfect; it gives new strength.
The commands of the Lord are trustworthy, giving wisdom to those who lack it.

Sermon 1.2
What is the "Duality of Law"?
There are two standards of Law in our world.
The hierarchy of sovereignty first is the Law of God and second the Law of Man. God's Law. First and foremost is the Moral Law of God, as set forth clearly in the Word of God, that being the Christian Holy Bible.
About the Truth. The Truth according to God, and the sovereignty of His perfect soul reviving law is currently available in more than 100 amazing English translations and versions of the Holy Bible (the Word of God) translated from the original languages of Jewish people; Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek some two plus millennium ago.
During the Babylonian exile, Aramaic became the language spoken by the Jews, and the Aramaic square script replaced the Paleo-Hebrew alphabet. After the Persian Empire's capture of Babylon, it became the language of culture and learning. King Darius I declared that Aramaic was to be the official language of the western half of his empire in 500 BC, and it is this Imperial Aramaic language that forms the basis of Biblical Aramaic.
God spelled out His law for His people (the Jews, Israelites) in the Old Testament as the Ten Commandments, and that was later perfectly clarified by the Lord Jesus Christ, (Father God Himself in human form) in the New Testament. Jesus died for our sins, and in doing so actually released all believers from the law, freed the faithful from sin (transgressions against God's law), because true disciples of God are not under law but under God's grace. God loves you. Anything against the law of God is sin. And God hates sin.
Note: When God hates something, it is not anything like the kind of hate the devil has. God does not hate anything for destruction, but rather for redemption.
About the Bible Law
There are three types of Laws in the Bible:
1.) Civil Laws - These are the laws described in the bible which apply only to the nation of Israel.
2.) Ceremonial Laws - These speak to cleanliness and also include priestly laws as those in Leviticus and the ceremonial laws that involve worship in Biblical times. 2,000 years ago, the days before Jesus.
3.) Moral Laws - The Lord's definition of sin. Specifically what not to do. Instruction on how to be holy. The 10 commandments would fall under this category.
Straight Forward Analysis of Biblical Law
As a Christian, you are not bound by Civil Laws which were established for the nation of Israel., neither are you bound by the said Ceremonial Laws. The Civil Laws and Ceremonial Laws apply to particular dispensations of days long gone, while Moral Laws are timeless, thus murder is wrong yesterday, today, and tomorrow,
The concept of “an eye for an eye” for example, was contained in Civil Laws which were applicable to the nation of Israel of old but not to Christians of today.
(Leviticus 19:19)
Don't have a variety of crops on the same field.
(Leviticus 19:19)
Don't wear clothes made of more than one fabric.
(Leviticus 19:27)
Don't cut your hair nor shave.
(Leviticus 20:9)
Any person who curseth his mother or father, must be killed.
(Deuteronomy 13:6-10)
If anyone, even your own family suggests worshipping another God, kill them.
Important note; Many righteous Old Testaments laws and customs mentioned in books like Leviticus and Malach are considered Ceremonial Laws, and thus not mandatory to be saved, yet are still of great importance for faith. These words of God, as crazy and harsh as they may sound today, still teach us about God's love for us, and of His holiness, and how to be more like Him.
Concepts like tithing, though not binding in order for a Christian to achieve salvation through Jesus Christ, are magnificent nuggets of wisdom about the Truth. Though tithing is not a Moral Law and thus not binding, being generous, a concept which requires spending more than 10% on charity is admirable and will generate immense blessings.
Practical Warning: Please do not allow the devil to confuse you. You are only bound by the Moral Laws stated in the Word of God. If you have to wonder in your mind whether a law is valid, then it cannot be a Moral Law, and it would be safe to say that you are not bound by it. When in doubt, just ask yourself, "What would Jesus do?"
What is Righteousness?
Righteousness (also called rectitude) is a theological concept in Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Hinduism.
It is an attribute that implies that a person's actions are justified, and can have the connotation that the person has been "judged" or "reckoned" as leading a life that is pleasing to God.

Sermon 1.3
Man's Law
Man's Law, aka "the authorities".
The second kind of law is man's law, which over centuries of bureaucracy, has become incredible complicated. The law of the land as made by governing authorities. This type of law falls into 5 categories:
US Constitution, Bill of Rights (1787) and all additional 17 Amendments made since.
The sovereignty of all law in the United States comes from the US Constitution. Elegant and simplistic supreme law of the land as ratified by the 13 states after the Revolutionary War in 1776. The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, to change the law to accommodate new situations that were not around when the Constitution was written, such as global communication and global commerce, nuclear warfare, space exploration, human cloning, etc. The point is to be always improving as a society.
Take the 13th Amendment for example: Amendment 13 - Slavery Abolished. Ratified December 6, 1865. After the American Civil War. 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
1st Amendment - Liberty and Freedom in America. The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.
Freedom of Religion
Freedom of Speech
Freedom of Press
Freedom to Assemble
Freedom to Petition the Government
It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights.
Criminal law is the body of law that relates to crime.
It regulates social conduct and proscribes whatever is threatening, harmful, or otherwise endangering to the property, health, safety, and moral welfare of people. It includes the punishment of people who violate these laws. Aka the harm principle.
Civil law, civilian law or Roman law.
Legal system originating in Europe, intellectualized within the framework of late Roman law, and whose most prevalent feature is that its core principles are codified into a referable system which serves as the primary source of law.
Administrative law is the body of law that governs the activities of administrative agencies of government.
Government agency action can include rulemaking, adjudication, or the enforcement of a specific regulatory agenda.
International law establishes president for foreign policy and diplomacy.
The set of rules generally regarded and accepted as binding in relations between states and between nations. It serves as a framework for the practice of stable and organized international relations. In the United States, only the Federal Government has authority and responsibility to deal with foreign policy.

Sermon 1.4
Secular Law and Government
The law is a set of rules that people are made to follow by the state.
The courts and police enforce this system of rules and punish people who break the laws, such as by making them pay a fine or other penalty or sending them to jail. In ancient societies, laws were written by leaders, to set out rules on how people can live, work and do business with each other.
Today in most countries, laws are written and voted on by groups of elected politicians in a legislature, such as a parliament or congress. To follow the laws of a society is to do legal things. An activity is illegal if it breaks a law or does not follow the laws.
1st Amendment Freedom of Religion
Secularism is the principle of the separation of government institutions and persons mandated to represent the state from religious institutions and religious dignitaries. One manifestation of secularism is asserting the right to be free from religious rule and teachings, or, in a state declared to be neutral on matters of belief, from the imposition by government of religion or religious practices upon its people. Another manifestation of secularism is the view that public activities and decisions, especially political ones, should be uninfluenced by religious beliefs and/or practices.
Also worth noting is Science and Scientific Laws. A scientific law is a statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes some aspects of the universe. A scientific law always applies under the same conditions, and implies that there is a causal relationship involving its elements.
The term "scientific law" is traditionally associated with the natural sciences, though the social sciences also contain laws. An example of a scientific law in social sciences is Second Law of Thermodynamics: In any cyclic process the entropy will either increase or remain the same. Entropy: a state variable whose change is defined for a reversible process at T where Q is the heat absorbed. Entropy: a measure of the amount of energy which is unavailable to do work..
Like theories and hypotheses, laws make predictions (specifically, they predict that new observations will conform to the law), and can be falsified if they are found in contradiction with new data.
John Stuart Mill articulated this principle in his landmark philosophy paper On Liberty (1859), where he argued that;
"The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others."
Paternalism and Secularism
Paternalism (or parentalism) is behavior, by a person, organization or state, which limits some person or group's liberty or autonomy for that person's or group's own good. Paternalism can also imply that the behavior is against or regardless of the will of a person, or also that the behavior expresses an attitude of superiority.
The word paternalism is from the Greek pater (πάτηρ, πατέρας) for father, though paternalism should be distinguished from patriarchy.

Sermon 1.5
US Legal System & Government
A philosopher once said that "all beauty is a making one of opposites."
This is so of the beauty of the US Constitution and its first ten amendments, referred to as the Bill of Rights. Our Constitution insists that America, in its treatment of people, honor simultaneously such opposites as agreement and disagreement, sameness and difference, oneness and individuality, so that we all might enjoy the blessings of liberty, freedom and personal security.
(The Congress, both houses of Congress; House of Representatives and Senate):
Statutory Law - Statutory Law is the term used to define written laws, usually enacted by a legislative body. Statutory laws vary from regulatory or administrative laws that are passed by executive agencies, and common law, or the law created by prior court decisions.
(President of the United States):
Regulatory and Administrative Law
(Supreme Court):
Case Law - Case law is the set of existing rulings which made new interpretations of law and, therefore, can be cited as precedents. Law as established by the outcome of former cases.
USA is a Constitutional Republic
We, citizens of the great nation of the United States of America, in the year 2,015 of our Lord, are blessed to live in a kind of democracy called a Constitutional Republic. The liberties we enjoy in this great country were hard fought from kings and dictators over the millennium.
Today, although "democracy" and "republic" are often used interchangeably, in ancient times they referred to distinct political systems. A democracy and a republic each had its own distinct institutional arrangements based on different ideas about what it meant for citizens to participate in the political process. Although the United States reflects the influence of both democracies and republics, these influences can at times be in tension with one another: While a democracy represents the principle of majority rule, a republic uses institutions to check and balance the power of majorities.
Democracy was invented by the ancient Athenians in the sixth century B.C. (600 years Before Christ)
It comes from the ancient Greek word "demos" or people and "kratos," meaning rule. Democracy was a political community in which the people, or the collective body of active citizens, exercised political power.
In contrast, the term "republic" is Roman in origin and has traditionally been dated back to 509 B.C. It comes from the Latin word "res," meaning thing or matter, and "publica," meaning public or common. The republic, therefore, meant the public matter, the thing that is in common among the people.
The job of the Federal government per the US Constitution is to:
1.) Insure domestic tranquility,
2.) Provide for the common defense,
3.) Promote the general welfare,
4.) Secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.
That is it, that's their job, end of story. Now the next question is are they doing it? Are they doing to much? Not enough? Could they do more? Should we have a bigger government or less government? All important questions, however I'm not going to discuss them here.
What you should be asking is who is "they" anyways? They are the people. The people are you, the citizens of the this great democratic nation. The voter. For ourselves and our posterity (that means our future world that our children inherit)

Sermon 1.6
Synthesis of God's Law
Sin is a noun for an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.
"Your heart knows what sin in the eyes of God"
Some sins are against the law of the land, some are not. The eternal Moral Law of God is divine, thus is above and succeeds any natural law of science or of man. The average person (anyone not Christian, unbelievers) does not have to follow the higher standard of moral law set by God.
All people must follow the laws of man or they will be punished by man.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All existing authority of man is God ordained.
The current authority, the laws of the land and rules of men must also be obeyed, because they too, the public servants, aka civil servants, your local police, firefighters, EMS personnel, doctors, nurses, school teachers, and statesman all the way down from your city council and local courts and judiciaries of the 50 US States (and Puerto Rico) all the way up to the US Military, our current bipartisan Congress to the President of the United States, are all servants of God (whether they know it or not) and are working God's plan for your own good.
Respect them, do no evil and you've got nothing to worry about.
Romans 13:1-4 (ESV)
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval,
4 for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

Sermon 1.7
God is good, sin is bad
Answer: God hates sin because it is the very antithesis of His nature. The Psalm describes God’s hatred of sin this way:
"Sin because it is the very antithesis God"
Psalm 5:4
For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; no evil dwells with You
Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 6:8
God hates sin because He is holy; holiness is the most exalted of all His attributes
Psalm 89:35; 92:15; Romans 9:14
His holiness totally saturates His being. His holiness epitomizes His moral perfection and His absolute freedom from blemish of any kind
The Bible presents God’s attitude toward sin with strong feelings of hostility, disgust, and utter dislike. Ask yourself this; "have I ever felt any of these?"
The Bible describes sin as;
Isaiah 1:6 (NKJV)
- putrefying sores
Psalm 38:4
- a heavy burden
Titus 1:15; 2 Corinthians 7:1
- defiling filth
Matthew 6:12-15
- a binding debt
1 John 1:6
- darkness
Isaiah 1:18
- a scarlet stain
Sin holds you back from God. And holds you back from having a happier life.
Isaiah 59:2; (see also Isaiah 13:11; Jeremiah 5:25)
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear”
Jesus likened false teachers to “blind leaders of the blind” (Matthew 15:14, NKJV).
John said that the one who hates his brother “does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him” (1 John 2:11).
The Bible says, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world” (1 John 2:15-16).

Sermon 1.8
Man's law compared to God's law
Short answer; it is complicated, God's Law is simple and pretty straight forward.
Mankind on the other hand, is a unique creation, made with free will, made is God's very image, and capable of both supreme good and immense evil.
Man's law does not and can not legislate morality or demand ceremonial anything. Kings and rules from all ages have tried and failed to legislate morality. Only God can do that. God created made to be free, to choose for himself whom he will follow. That means that no matter how noble or petty the rules of the local authorities are, no law of man can make other men behave one way or another, for good or bad. Only he can choose that for himself.
Man's law is to keep civil order, and thus all man's law are civil.
I reiterate Romans 13 again here in another translation to drive home the point to respect the law and the authories and courts of man...
Romans 13:1-5 Good News Translation (GNT)
1 Everyone must obey state authorities, because no authority exists without God's permission, and the existing authorities have been put there by God.
2 Whoever opposes the existing authority opposes what God has ordered; and anyone who does so will bring judgment on himself.
3 For rulers are not to be feared by those who do good, but by those who do evil. Would you like to be unafraid of those in authority? Then do what is good, and they will praise you,
4 because they are God's servants working for your own good. But if you do evil, then be afraid of them, because their power to punish is real. They are God's servants and carry out God's punishment on those who do evil.
5 For this reason you must obey the authorities—not just because of God's punishment, but also as a matter of conscience.

Do a searching and fearless moral inventory of yourself, for your soul's sake. Figure out who you are. You may be sinning and not even know it... What makes you do these sins? What justifications have you fooled yourself into believing as to why these don't apply to you? And what failures have you had in your life, and what sin could possibly led you there?
Romans 12:2 (NASB)

On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Sermon 1.12
The "Holy" Commandments
Summary of 10 Ccommandments:
1 And God spoke all these words, saying,
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
3 “You shall have no other gods before me. (Not against Man's Law, but it is sure death to eternal hell to worship anything but Jesus and the God of Love)
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. (Not against Man's Law )
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. (Not against Man's Law, but the greatest of all sins)
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (Jesus clarified this to remind us to assemble with the saints)
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. (Not against Man's Law, but is sin)
13 “You shall not murder. (Harm Principle. Always has been against Man's Law)
14 “You shall not commit adultery. (Harm Principle. Also against Man's Law if you are legally married, grounds for divorce. Double against the law in the military under the UCMJ)
15 “You shall not steal. (Harm Principle. Also against Man's Law)
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (Harm Principle. Also against Man's Law, in most situations)
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor's house; (Not always specifically against Man's Law, but absolutely sinful and leads to death)

Sermon 1.13
Love the Sinner
In St. Augustine's Letter 211, written in Latin around 424 A.D. (424 years after death of Jesus) "Cum dilectione hominum et odio vitiorum".
Which translates roughly in English to "With love for mankind and hatred of sins." The phrase has become more famous as "love the sinner but hate the sin" or "hate the sin and not the sinner". The latter form made famous in Mahatma Gandhi's 1929 autobiography.
"Cum dilectione hominum et odio vitiorum".
Final note about the importance of giving: What God says about charity and giving;
Malachi 3:10 New International Version (NIV)
10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
Malachi 3:10 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
10 The Lord All-Powerful says, “Try this test. Bring one-tenth of your things to me. Put them in the treasury. Bring food to my house. Test me! If you do these things, I will surely bless you. Good things will come to you like rain falling from the sky. You will have more than enough of everything.

Sermon 1.14
Don't fight the Law
The Law is not the problem. Both God's law and man's law are important and necessary for good. Justice is and will be by the will of Him when the day is done. In the famous song 1970s song by the Clash;
"I fought the law and the law won,
I fought the law and the law won"...
... still holds true to this day.
The Biblical approach towards teaching God's people about righteousness and holiness preeminently focuses on the heart of man, that is his way of thinking, feeling, and acting, and the more wholly he conforms and obeys God's law, the greater he can understand the righteousness and pure holiness of God and His love for us.
In this sense, only Christ can be called dikaios (a Greek adjective, derived from dikē),
dikaios meaning: "right, judicial approval","approved by God";righteous;"just in the eyes of God".
dikaios: correct, righteous, by innocent
Original Word: δίκαιος, ία, ιον Part of Speech: Adjective Transliteration: dikaios Phonetic Spelling: (dik'-ah-yos) Short Definition: just, righteous, impartial
Definition: just; especially, just in the eyes of God; righteous; the elect (a Jewish idea).
(Ref Acts 7:52; 22:14; 1 Pet 3:18; 1 John 2:1).
dikaios is not to be found in humankind, i.e. perfect conformity to the will of God is not possible, we are all sinners (Romans 3:10, 26).
Ephesians 2:8 English Standard Version (ESV)
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God (because He loves you),
Ephesians 2:8 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
8 I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God.
In the holy name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen
Thank you
