UL 1997 Preview
Feds' Repeat? Toppers' Redemption?
There will be no sneaking up on people this year for the Boston Federals.
A surprise team in 1996 that narrowly squeaked into the playoffs on the last day on its way to its second UL title, the Feds enter the 1997 campaign with bullseyes on their backs. The addition of MVP candidate Albert Belle— combined with the maturation of young stars Jim Thome, Julian Tavarez; and Sammy Sosa and Mike Piazza hitting their peak—makes Mark Waller's charges the early favorites.
A resurgent St. Louis Maroons squad under rookie GM Jeremy Lemmon is tipped to top a wide-open West Division, while Atlanta and Cleveland will make another attempt to grasp the elusive ring. St. Louis missed the playoffs the last two years with 87- and 89-win campaigns, while GM Andy Chaney (ATL) and Charlie Qualls (CLE) have both made the postseason with strong pitching staffs two of the last three seasons.
Other compelling stories this season include GM Glen Reed's return to Brooklyn, the club he led to seven UL titles from 1955-64. Also moving is GM Tim Widholm, who moves to L.A. and will try to raise the Outlaws back into contention. Finally, the Seattle Rainiers are poised to be the most improved club and almost certainly will end a run of three straight Waffle Houses.
Offensive East, Pitching-Heavy West
Keystone is predicted to have the most prolific offense, followed by Boston and Brooklyn. St. Louis is a surprise pick to lead the league in pitching, followed by Atlanta, and Los Angeles. The Maroons rotation features three pitchers over 35, including Jim Gott, who was 20-8 last season.
Vladimir Guerrero (MON) vaulted from #15 to #1 on the player rankings and Chipper Jones (STL) debuts in the #7 position. Havana's Sean Bergman is the most improved pitcher, jumping 10 spots to #2, making him an early Cy Young favorite, while former Cy Young winners Floyd Youmans (LA) and Dwight Gooden (SEA) continue to decline. The Brooklyn rotation should get a boost from Mike Timlin and Kevin Brown, who enter the top 20 this year. Brown—drafted at age 20 in 1986—was a top-5 prospect for four years, but failed to emerge as a superstar until last year, his age-30 season, when he posted a 16-7 record and 3.02 ERA.
Senate Probe/McCain-Reid Tour Update
Expansion on the Horizon?
The unofficial “Ball Out West” Senate committee of western senators is (yet again) expanding its investigation of the UL’s fake-baseball monopoly. The Feinstein-Gramm group has grown to 10 senators representing eight western states, with Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) joining in late March in time to secure free tickets to the Washington Monuments home opener on April 1. “Oh, hell yeah!” Domenici exclaimed, when asked if he was concerned about the issue (and wanted to score box seats at Griffith Stadium for the game against the Toronto Polar Bears).
Committee Co-Chair Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) announced on Opening Day that the Bay Area would get dibs over the “very next” UL franchise, either through expansion or relocation. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) told reporters that negotiations were “moving forward” on the timing of expansion and the location of additional franchises. Separately, Sen. Phil Gramm (R-TX) said the committee “had the league by the balls.” When asked to elaborate, Gramm only chuckled and adjusted his oversized “Don’t Mess With Texas” belt buckle.
As usual the UL Commissioner remained mum under the guidance of his legal counsel. An intern at the sprawling United League Headquarters and Resort revealed that the commissioner has looked “haggard” and “worn out” in recent weeks, suggesting the pressure of the investigation might be getting to him—or maybe it’s the C6/C7 cervical stenosis. The other intern (the league can only afford two unpaid interns, which tells you everything you need to know about the state of its payroll and finance departments) provided investigative reporter Stedman Pacafox with a “for internal use only” memo that reveals that the UL is looking into sites in Texas and California for potential UL expansion as early as 1999. A second—and potential rival—investigative reporter claimed that Pacafox may be squatting in an unused storage room at UL HQ, which would explain his nearly-constant “insider access” to league operations.
Meanwhile, for their part of anti-trust investigation, Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Harry Reid (D-NV) released more details on their “extensive tour of UL facilities” (aka epic road trip to hit all 18 UL stadiums in a rented Ford Mustang convertible). The Senators have arranged (courtesy of UL HQ) luxury box seat accommodations and announced the first 10 stops on their tour.

Staffers for the senators said they expect “unobstructed sightlines” and “free nachos” as part of their official inquiry and that the self-proclaimed “Odd Couple” would make a stop at the UL Hall of Fame in Beachville, Ont. on the drive between Toronto and Cleveland. Staffers also revealed that the duo would not actually drive the Ford Mustang the whole time, but would fly from city to city and only use the convertible from airports to ballparks, while staffers would take turns driving the car between cities.
