SEASON PREVIEW EDITION
Brooklyn's Year?
Chicago, Havana Take Aim at L.A in West
After a slow, yet inexorable ascent, having built the deepest stable of pitching prospects over nearly half a decade, GM Tim Widholm's Brooklyn Superbas have arrived. So say some pundits, at least.
Brooklyn is projected to win a league-leading 97 games this year, according to BNN's preseason predictions, led not only by solid pitching, but by what could be the most prolific offense in the league. Ken Griffey Jr and Matt Williams are poised to drub East Division opposition into submission, while the reining division champs Toronto, facing payroll cap constraints, have lost George Bell and Mariano Duncan.
In the West, the Los Angeles Outlaws, coming off their third league title, face fresh challenge from the Chicago Colts and Havana Leones—both of which appear to have improved during the offseason—in addition to their perennial archrival St. Louis.
Players to Watch
• Brooklyn's Geronimo Pena is ranked the 5th best second baseman in the league and a dark horse candidate for Rookie of the Year.
• Seattle's pitching staff got a huge boost, with starter David West and closer Doug Henry moving from league-average territory into elite status.
• Keystone's Tim Salmon, Boston's Mike Piazza, and Atlanta's Pedro Martinez enter the league with high expectations to make an immediate impact.
• The Detroit Griffins added slugger Ivan Calderon to an exciting young pitching staff, and added C Dave Nilsson, LF Ryan Klesko, and SP Pedro Astacio via the draft.
In early July, all 18 clubs will compete in the Founder's Cup, which returns after a 21-year absence and will be held every three years. The league has hinted that large corporate sponsorships will fund significant prize money for the event, with details forthcoming.
Finally, as the league approaches the end of the current broadcasting deal at the end of 1993, rumors are circulating that the players union may push for a greater share of revenues beginning with the new agreement in 1994. Both owners and players are expecting a large cash influx with sponsorship, advertising, and merchandising revenues all projected to increase significantly in the mid-90s.
New Park, New Ace
Pedro to Open Aaron-Antonelli Field
After 27 years of occupancy at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the Hilltoppers have cut the ribbon at their sparkling new home: Aaron-Antonelli Field. Named after the franchise's two best players and first Hall of Famers, the stadium has a massive 60,000-seat capacity, making it the second largest after Cleveland's Municipal Stadium. The park include numerous amenities, including luxury boxes, that the Toppers hope will inject much-needed revenue to a long-suffering club.
Adding to the excitement of Opening Day 1992, new Toppers ace Pedro Martinez will get the start. Pedro is the most highly-anticipated pitching prospect since Dwight Gooden. In contrast to Fulton County Stadium, which was nicknamed "the Launching Pad," Aaron-Antonelli Field projects to be much more pitching-friendly park, just slightly below league average for batting average and slightly above average for home runs.
AAF continues the trend of new ballparks in the United League. The circuit has introduced six new ballparks since Manhattan's fabulous Ferraro Field at Hudson Yards opened in 1986. Toronto's Ed Werenich Stadium ("The Wrench") opened in 1987, Florida and Keystone both entered the league with brand new stadiums in 1990, and Denver replaced an aging Mile High Stadium with a more pitcher-friendly Ralph Carr Field in downtown in 1991.
The league has announced an initiatives to replace crumbling stadiums in Cleveland and San Francisco. Both Municipal Stadium and Seals Stadium were built in 1931 and are showing their age, especially in contrast to the new ballparks springing up around the league. Following the success of New Shibe Park in Philadelphia, a civic group in Cleveland is building momentum to rebuild the old League Park in the historic Hough neighborhood of east Cleveland, while San Francisco officials have their eye on a promising piece of land at Candlestick Point on the western shore of San Francisco Bay.
