OPENING DAY EDITION
Pedro's Dream Start?
Clemens Shutout, L.A. Rout in Openers
MON 6, ATL 5
Southern baseball fans welcomed a new era of baseball on Opening Day, with the most highly-anticipated pitching prospects taking the hill on the spanking-new Aaron-Antonelli Field. Nearly 60,000 fans oohed and aahed as Pedro Martinez tossed seven shutout innings in the league's newest green cathedral. But then the bullpen got involved, and Montreal plated six runs in the eighth to steal a 6-5 win and spoil the party.
MAN 7, BRO 5
Manhattan plated five early off Britt Burns with catcher Darrin Fletcher going 3-for-3, as the ManSox beat their crosstown rivals 7-5 despite a pair of homers by Mike Scioscia.
BOS 6, KEY 0
Roger Clemens went the distance at Fenway, blanking the Starlings on five hits while striking out 10. Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds homered.
HAV 4, FLO 3
Mike Stanley's two-run shot off Stan Belinda spoiled not only the closer's save opportunity, but opening day in Miami. Mike Mussina struck out nine for the hosts.
WAS 6, CLE 3, 11 inn.
Cleveland led 3-0 after seven shutout innings by John Smoltz, then the Barons bullpen went to work, allowing six runs in four innings to gift the visiting Monuments a 6-3, 11 inning win.
DET 2, CHI 1
Erik Hanson allowed just four hits, but unfortunately for the Colts, two of them came bundled, or should I say bungled, in the seventh with a passed ball and error, as Detroit scored a pair to eek out a 2-1 win behind Andy Benes.
TOR 11, SF 1
Ellis Burks had a perfect day at the plate, hitting 3-for-3 and scoring four times, as Toronto destroyed the hosting Spiders 11-1 in front of nearly 30,000 at Seals Stadium.
DEN 4, SEA 1
Ron Darling outdueled the "Caveman" Don Robinson, allowing just seven hits and one run, and Rob Dibble got his first save as a 14er in a 4-1 win at the Kingdome.
LA 9, STL 0
A matchup of perennial West powers turned into a rout, as the defending champion Outlaws touch St. Louis for 17 hits and 9 runs while Floyd Youmans and three relievers combined for a 7-hit shutout.
Higuera No-Hitter
Cy Winner Keys Monuments Fast Start
The Washington Monuments got off to a red-hot start, winning 15 of their first 18 games, but the highlight without question was Teddy Higuera's no-hitter at Griffith Stadium on Apr. 12. The 33-year-old defending Cy Young winner allowed three walks and struck out 11. It was just the second no-hitter by a reigning Cy Young winner. Larry Dierker pitched no-hitters in 1984, the year after winning the 1983 Cy, and also pitched a no-no during his Cy Young season. Whitey Ford also pitched a no-hitter during his Cy Young season in 1964. Ford's was the first no-hitter by a Washington Monument, followed by Frank Viola in 1984, Bob Moose in 1985, and now Higuera.
Gooden Out Four Months
Tricep Tear Sidelines Toronto Ace
The defending division champs lost their closer Jose Mesa in spring training and now have lost their ace and 4-time Cy winner Dwight Gooden for four months. Gooden torn his tricep on Apr. 21 in the seventh inning of a two-hit shutout. Gooden got his 150th win while his arm was in an MRI machine. According to the league statistical office, he is "almost certainly" the fastest to 150 wins in UL history.

Washington had an April for the ages, going 20-8 and ranking 1st in both runs and runs against. They started the season 15-3 before losing four straight and splitting their last 10 of the month.
Wade Boggs (.389) leads the league in batting, Chili Davis (25) is 2nd in RBIs, and the rotation has a league-best 3.09 ERA.
The Flyin' Lions may have the best young pitchers in the league. Detroit ranks 4th in runs against, thanks to Andy Benes (4-0, 2.77, age 23), Pete Schourek (3-1, 2.35, age 22), and closer Mark Wohlers (8 SV, 2.30, age 22).
With Dwight Gooden out for four months, the Toronto bullpen will be asked to lift a heavier load. If April is any indication, they are up for the task. Toronto's relievers have a combined 2.29 ERA, 2nd in the league. Closer Mike Jackson has 5 saves and a 0.84 ERA and Mike Schooler and Rod Nichols have yet to allowed an earned run in 12.2 combined innings.
Ken Griffey Jr's batting average is way down (.245), but he still managed 20 RBIs in April; he is batting .333 with runners in scoring position.
Mike Greenwell is 0-for-23 in high leverage situations and 16-40 (.421) in low-leverage situations.
Eric Davis' league-leading .720 SLG and 1.160 OPS earned him Batter of the Month honors for April. Davis' .360-10-21 is pacing the league's second-best offense. The ManSox have 54 HR in their first 28 games.
Bob Horner hit his 600th home run on April 7 and overtook Frank Robinson for third on the all-time list with his 603rd home run on Apr. 28. The 33-year-old third baseman won six home run titles between 1979 and 1988 and hit at least 40 homers in his first eight UL seasons. #2 on the all-time list is Mickey Mantle with 634, and Horner needs just 84 to reach Orlando Cepeda's all-time mark of 687.
After a 7-16 start, the V's have won five straight, including a three-game sweep of San Francisco and a 3-1 win over Toronto. Junior Felix and Ivan Rodriguez each had 4 RBIs in a 15-1 drubbing of the Spiders on Apr. 29.
#2 draft pick Mike Piazza and hit .354-5-21, .960 in April and won Player of the Week Apr. 27.
New closer Todd Stottlemyre is off to a good start, with a 2.19 ERA and 5 saves in April.
#3 starter Bob Sebra is not off to a good start, with a 10.05 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in 6 starts.
Tim Salmon is already wearing the "Mr. Starling" moniker after winning Rookie of the Month honors with a .287-8-20, 1.007 OPS April.
Reggie Sanders had 7 RBI on Apr. 11 in a 9-6 win over Toronto, including a walk-off 3-run homer off Mike Schooler. The 31st overall pick in the 1991 draft, Sanders has taken over the CF job at New Shibe Park. He is batting .163-2-13 thru 27 games.
The Maroons rank 2nd in runs against, thanks to some key contribution by down-ballot candidates. Fifth starter Craig McMurtry posted a 2.01 ERA in 5 April starts, and middle relievers Mike Walker (0.90) and Donn Pall (1.17) have microscopic ERAs.
Dan Pasqua was 5-5 with 6 RBIs in an 8-2 win over Boston Apr. 28.
Ron Darling won Pitcher of the Month with a 5-0, 2.06 April, incluing a 4-hit, 12-K shutout of Los Angeles on Apr. 6.
How does a team that ranks 10th in both runs and runs against have the 5th best record in the league? Clutch hitting and bullpen. Denver has three hitters OPSing over 1.000 in Close/Late situations (Mark McLemore 1.132, Rick Wilkins 1.058, and Ozzie Smith 1.008), while Norm Charlton has 6 saves, and Rob Dibble has a 0.00 ERA in 10.2 IP.
Third starter Kevin Ritz is off to the best start of his four-year career, with a 2.62 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in six starts. He allowed exactly five hits in each of his first three starts for a 1.80 ERA.
Orlando Merced leads the Leones with a .340 average and ranks third in zone rating among outfielders.
Terry Steinbach is tied for fourth in batting (.360), thanks to a league-leading .447 batting average on the road; he is batting just .292 at Seals Stadium.
#2 starter Greg Hibbard is 4-2 despite a 6.82 ERA.
Bill Spiers is the leading defensive infielder, with 3.5 ZR, despite starting just 14 games.
1-2 starters Erik Hanson and Melido Perez are a combined 0-7, while the bullpen is a combined 7-4. The Colts have already played seven extra-inning games, including games of 21, 17, and 14 innings; they are 4-3 in the extended affairs.
Reigning stolen base champion Delino DeShields again leads the league with 14 stolen bases, with just two caught stealings.
Willie McGee leads the league with a .625 average in high-leverage situations.
L.A.'s offense is sputtering out of the gate. The Outlaws rank 14th in batting (.256) and 16th in OPS (.682). Milt Thompson (.306 OBP) and Rey Sanchez (.268 OBP) have been a bust at the top of the order.
Mike Mussina leads the league in strikeouts (56) and WAR (1.7). He has already equalled last year's WAR total. He has a 1.90 ERA in his last four starts.
Pedro Martinez' career is off to the best start of any starter in recent history, Dwight Gooden included. Pedro has a 0.92 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in his first six starts. He has pitched 21.1 shutout innings with 18 Ks and 2 walks over his last three starts.
