A "BIT" ABOUT THE ARTIST...
Steve and Sandra Alt are lifelong residents of the West Liberty area. In their spare time, they "collect" printing presses and related paraphernalia, which they restore so they can be operated. Their delightful print shop is called Liberty Press located at 107 W. Third Street.
Their website is http://libertypressia.com/ where Steve has listed the unique presses, etc. they have. Here is an article written in the West Liberty Index in 2022 that tells a bit more about this delightful artistic operation: Just the Right Type
Steve taught a fun paper-making workshop for us in March. He has made paper using many items such as flowers, corn husks, weed(s), and just about anything that he thinks might provide the right color and or texture. His photo above shows him with stacks of finished papers he has made.
Steve previously served on the board for the West Liberty Area Arts Council.
Paper being strained on a screen after dipped from the vat of liquid mash
Another paper being made
Here the paper has been lifted off from the screen and is being dried on absorbent chamois
Another almost finished paper
Steve has us line up for a chance to put our hands in the vat and lift out our own papers by dipping a screen into the liquid.
Note all the cabinets below Steve and the posters behind him in his shop. He has a blender turned on mixing the "mash" to add to the water for paper-making.
Dipping away!
Waiting for a turn!
