ARTIST STATEMENT/BIO
Melody Wieneke Henderson is a native of West Liberty. Ever since her childhood she can remember sitting and doodling, coloring, and enjoying drawing. Her high school senior year she was accepted and awarded a scholarship to an art school in Minneapolis, however not being able to afford the rest of the tuition, she was unable to attend.
Melody chose to work and save so she could marry her high school sweetheart. Together they raised a beautiful daughter, who blessed them with three granddaughters and a grandson.
Melody is retired from the West Liberty School District after working there for 25 years. Even though she worked in an office everyday, she still used her artistic abilities in different ways, she painted signs for the local fire department, the American Legion and the Muscatine County Fair. She drew pictures and paintings for grave monuments at Iowa Memorial. She owned The Flower and Gift Shoppe by Melody, where she was able to create fresh and silk designs. After selling, she kept herself busy with floral arranging for friends' weddings, and working for florists in her spare time. Melody and Mark take great pride in their community and volunteer as much as possible.
Keeping busy during retirement Melody is gradually finding her way back to her artistic side. She hopes to get back soon into drawing and painting for her enjoyment while displaying her creations at the Brick Street Gallery.
